C. Sykes. According to by-standers, Dickey, with an open knife, approached Sykes, who was sitting on a bench in the store, and made some remark. Apparently, Sykes resented the utterance of Dickey, a clash seemed about to ensue and those standing near avoided physical contact between the two men by keeping them separated. But Dickey succeeded in slashing Sykes in the shoulder, if the report of witnesses, at that exciting moment, comes straight. Sykes shot Dickey, the bullet entering Dickey's brain, and death coming instantly. Sheriff Allen Price and his men found Sykes in a neighbor's house when they arrived. No resistance was made by Sykes. The sheriff brought the prisoner to Winnsboro and he is now in the parish jail awaiting action of the grand jury, which body meets in April.
