Johnson Mathews, colored, was killed last Friday on the Winnsboro-Delhi highway a mile or so above the Baker Plantation in North Franklin Parish. Mathews was apparently enroute to Delhi when the incident occured. Residents living on the road heard several shots. This instigated investigation and Mathew's body was found at the rear of an automobile he was driving. One bullet had entered the brain and several had pierced the body near the spinal column. Two negroes, Alf Mason and Otho Butler, were seen to enter the car driven by Mathews near Baker's store according to several residents. No one was near the automobile when the investigation of the shooting was made. It is thought that Mathews was killed while fixing a tire and was fired upon unwares. Mason and Butler are now being held in the parish jail, awaiting developments. --------------------------------------------------
