Berry Passed Away Last Thursday Funeral services for Mrs. Barbara Edna Berry, 81, wife of the late C. L. Berry, were held at the First Methodist church in Winnsboro, on Friday, April 30th. Rev. Briscoe Carter, of Winnsboro; Rev. H. W. Rickey of Jena, and Rev. L. W. Cain of Denham Springs, officiated. Interment was made in the Winnsboro cemetery. The active pallbearers were: Sheriff Ed T. Randall, N. L. Moore, W. W. Eckhardt, W. F. Prickett, Joe Dante, D. K. Mayer, N. D. Womble, and J. W. Sullivan. The honorary pallbearers were: H. J. Lea, E. D. Walter, Bailey Martin, B. S. Landis, Jno. L. McDuff, H. Bondurant, Dr. J. D. Rogers, Dr. E. S. Little, and Dr. V. J. Funderbunk. Mrs. Berry lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Richardson in Winnsboro. She is survived by one son, C. W. Berry, Sr. of Winnsboro; four daughters, Mrs. Martha Doman and Mrs. Louis Coincon of Baton Rouge; Mrs. C. L. Richardson of Winnsboro and Mrs. B. F. Dooms of Kuttawa, Ky.; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. -------------------------------------------------- The Franklin Sun Winnsboro, LA November 28, 1937 Submitted March 2006 by: Glenda Warner Boyd NEWT GARCIN BURIED ON LAST SATURDAY The funeral services of Newt Garcin, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Garcin, were held at Liddieville on last Saturday afternoon, with Rev. T. J. Ratcliff officiating. Young Garcin left his home Friday afternoon on his horse to look for a lost cow. Friday night the family became alarmed when the horse returned home without Garcin--a posse of friends searched for him all night, and Saturday morning his body was found in Big Slough near Boeuf River. His hat was on the bank of the stream. G. HILBURN DIES ON FRIDAY AT HER HOME Mrs. Minnie Hilburn, 27, wife of Mr. Goddon (Gordon) Hilburn, of Liddieville, passed away at her home on last Friday, from several days illness of pneumonia. Mrs. Hilburn leaves, her husband and three children, George, Fleming, and Mike; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Jennins (sic Jennings), five brothers and five sisters to mourn her passing. Funeral services were held Saturday, with Rev. T. J. Hill Died Last Wednesday Near Winnsboro William B. Hill, 22, passed away on last Wednesday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Martin, after several months illness. Funeral services were held on last Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Crowville cemetery, Rev. C. S. Wroten officiating. Mr. Hill leaves to mourn his passing, his father, Mr. C. P. Hill of near Winnsboro; two sisters, Mrs. Oscar Martin and Mrs. E. E. H. Hughes of Gilbert, passed away on last Saturday morning January 30th at 4 o'clock, after several months sickness. His remains were laid to rest in the Oakley cemetery on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, with Rev. R. L. Cook, pastor of the Gilbert Baptist church and Rev. Flowers, pastor of the Gilbert Methodist church conducting the funeral services. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. W. H. Johnston Died Here On January 29, at Local Hospital G. E. Johnston, 68, a pioneer resident of Franklin parish, died at a local hospital on January 29th, death resulting from illness of a long duration. Mr. Johnston was a resident of Franklin Parish for more than thirty years. Born in Yazoo County, Mississippi, he moved to Winnfield with his parents in 1875. Following the death of his mother, the family moved to Franklin parish several years later. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. G. E. Johnston, of Winnsboro; one brother, J. W. Johnston of Newellton, three half-brothers, Andrew Johnston, of Newellton; Hardy Johnston, and Wayne Johnston of Liddieville; one half-sister, Mrs. Mamie Chapman of Liddieville, and a host of other relatives. --------------------------------------------------- The Franklin Sun Winnsboro, LA May 6, 1937 Submitted January 2009 by: Glenda Warner Boyd Mary E. McLin Died Suddenly Last Tuesday Miss Mary E. McLin, died suddenly from a heart attack on Tuesday morning. Miss McLin was born in Gretna, La. and in early childhood moved to Baton Rouge where she lived most of her life. She was a sister of the late Mrs. B. S. Landis, Sr. and came to Winnsboro several years ago to make her home with Mr. Landis. Funeral services will be held at the Magnolia Cemetery in Baton Rouge, Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Mr. B. S. Landis, Sr., Mr. B. S. Landis, Jr. and Mrs. Walter Woods nearest surviving relatives will accompany her remains to Baton Rouge. ------------------------------------------------------ The Franklin Sun Winnsboro, LA May 6, 1937 Submitted January 2009 by: Glenda Warner Boyd Mrs. Newcomer Passed Away Last Saturday Mrs. J. L. Newcomer, 84, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. A. Cordill, at 3 o'clock Saturday morning, May 1st. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the First Baptist Church in Winnsboro, with Rev. Dana Terry and Rev. C. S. Wroten, officiating. Interment was made in the family cemetery five miles east of Crowville at the old family homesite on Bayou Macon. Mrs. Newcomer is survived by three sons, U. L. Griffing, G. A. Newcomer, and B. B. Newcomer, all of Crowville; three daughters, Mrs. Sue Eddins, and Mrs. E. A. Cordill of Winnsboro; and Mrs. Jesse Shelton of Epps; one brother, Allen Eddins of Winnsboro; 29 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Active pallbearers were: John T. O'Brien, Clyde Taylor, W. Richardson Buried At Oakley Cemetery Gilbert, LA --- Funeral services for Samuel L. Richardson, 47, of Jena, who died at a hospital in Shreveport last Monday was held at the Oakley cemetery at Gilbert on Tuesday, May 18th. Rev. I. W. Flowers pastor of the Methodist church and Rev. R. L. Cook, pastor of the Baptist church, both at Gilbert officiated. Mr. Richardson is survived by his wife, two daughters and two sons. He is also survived by four sisters, Mrs. L. B. Kiper of Gilbert; Mrs. J. B. Farley of Wisner; Mrs. Paul D. Yates of Rocky Mount, N. C.; Mrs. Bertha McLeod of Gem, Alberta, Canada and by two brothers, W. W. Richardson of Shreveport and Daniel W. Sikes Buried Last Saturday Funeral services for J. B. Sikes, 69, of Winnsboro, who died Thursday, April 29th at a Vicksburg sanitarium, were held Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Christian church here, with Rev. Crayton S. Brooks, pastor of the First Christian church of Monroe, officiating, assisted by Rev. Dan Terry, and Rev. J. H. Keys. Interment was made in the Masonic cemetery at Crowville. Mr. Sikes is survived by his widow, Mrs. Martha Elizabeth Sikes; four daughters, Mrs. J. R. Smith, Mrs. S. E. Smith, Mrs. Lee Burris, and Mrs. Sarah Lee Sanders of Fort Necessity, two sons, Elvin Sikes and Reuben Sikes of Winnsboro. --------------------------------------------------
