Loftin Daniel Ernest Mathews Riley Roberts ****************** The Franklin Sun May 25, 1939 Submitted by Karen Sue McNease Miss Sara Berry Death Comes To Miss Sara Berry After Illness Deceased Was Member Of Prominent Family: Died at Age of 33 Miss Sara Evelyn Berry, member of a family which has been prominent in Franklin parish for a number of years, died at the home of her parents here at 4:30 Tuesday afternoon, following an illness of several years duration. Miss Berry was an active member of the First Methodist church of Winnsboro and was well known in the teaching profession of this section of the state. She taught in the elementary department of the Winnsboro high school for the past 12 years, during which time she won the love and respect of the pupils who came under her influence. Following her graduation from the Louisiana State Normal in 1925, Miss Berry taught in the Crowville school for one year. Miss Berry was born in Winnsboro July 7, 1906 and spent her girlhood here. She finished high school in 1923 and after her work at the Louisiana State Normal, completed her education at the state university. The esteem in which the deceased was held was expressed by the wealth of flowers sent by her numerous friends. It is interesting to note that Miss Berry is the fifth generation of her mother's family to live in Winnsboro. Her great-grandfather, Dr. W.M. Guice was known and loved in this parish as an educator and public spirited citizen. When he died, children of the public schools of Franklin parish erected a marble slab to his memory. Miss Berry's paternal grandfather, C.L. Berry was a prominent lawyer in this section and an important figure in parish legal circles. The deceased is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Berry, Sr.; two brothers, C. W. Berry, Jr., and B.I. Berry, both of whom are attorneys; twin sisters, Thelma and Zelma Berry; and one niece, Mary Murphy Berry. Funeral services will be held this morning at 10:30 in the First Methodist church. Rev. O.L. Tucker, pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in the old city cemetery. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Lowry Funeral Home. Active pallbearers; W.B. Glover, L.E. May, J.P. Sills, Jr., C.L. Parker, D.K. Mayer, J.D. Girlinghouse. ***************** The Franklin Sun May 11, 1939 Submitted by Karen Sue McNease John S. Green Sr. Father of Local Woman Succumbs John S. Green Sr., age 60, well known Bastrop dairyman and planter, died Tuesday morning at 2:30 in the St. Francis sanitarium after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Green is the father of Mrs. C.C. Nelson of Winnsboro, supervisor of parish schools. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Horace M. Bennett, pastor of the First Baptist church, at the residence at 4 p.m., Tuesday. Interment was made in the Mer Rouge cemetery. Born at Aurelle in Union county, Arkansas, Mr. Green attended Ouachita Baptist college at Arkadelphia. In 1905 he and Miss Mary Lou Clark of Union parish were married. They moved to Mer Rouge in 1910 and after living there 19 years moved to the present home on the Mer Rouge road near Bastrop. A member of the Baptist church, Mr. Green was recognized as a leading agriculturist of the parish. Surviving are his widow; three daughters, Mrs. C.C. Nelson, Winnsboro; Mrs. R.H. Worrell, Fernandina, Fla.; Miss Lois Green, L.S.U. student; three sons, Dr. Max Green of New Orleans; John S. Green and Edward Green, L.S.U. students; three brothers, Dr. Frank Green of Kilbourne, Fred A. Green of Monroe, and Herbert Green of Warren, Ark.; five sisters, Mrs. John Amos Nelson of Ruston, Mrs. J. Adams, Strong, Ark., Mrs. George Payne of Pine Bluff, Ark.; Mrs. Grace Dollar, Santa Ana, Calif., and Mrs. Jeff Hartsfield of Hope, Ark. ************** The Franklin Sun May 4, 1939 Submitted by Karen Sue McNease Francis C. Loftin 56 Year Old Farmer Dies Suddenly At Home Near Crowville Francis C. Loftin, farmer near Crowville, died suddenly at his home Tuesday morning at 11:45. He was 56 years of age. Funeral services were held at his residence Wednesday afternoon at three o'clock and interment followed at Delhi Masonic cemetery. Mr. Loftin is survived by his wife, Mrs. Dicie Jane Loftin; two sons, Kenthal and L.B. Loftin of Crowville; eight brothers, A.D. Loftin, Longstreet, Tex., T.F. Loftin, Rodessa, La., Clyde Loftin, Cotton Valley, Orren Loftin, Hammond, Zez and Griffith Loftin, Coushatta, J.L. Loftin, Delhi, and Thurman Loftin, Oklahoma; and two sisters, Mrs. Susie Bogan, Natchitoches, and Mrs. Ruth Brewer, Doyline, La. Funeral services were under the management of the Mulhearn Funeral Home. ********************* The Franklin Sun May 4, 1939 Submitted by Karen Sue McNease Daniel Ernest Mathews Crowville Man Dies At Noon Thursday In Monroe Hospital Daniel Ernest Mathews, Crowville resident, died at the age of 45 in a Monroe hospital Thursday, April 27. Funeral services were held at the Crowville Baptist church Friday at 11 a.m. , with interment following at the Crowville cemetery. Rev. C.S. Wroten officiated at the last rites. Funeral arrangements were made by the Mulhearn Funeral Home. Mr. Daniels is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Nora Bevens, Hot Springs, Ark., and Miss Dora Mathews, Vicksburg, Miss.; a brother, Lonnie Mathews, Winnsboro; a sister, Mrs. Lula Bradley, Winnsboro and a half-sister, Mrs. Ruby Newsom, who lives at Delhi. Pallbearers at the funeral Friday were M.O. Casidy, Ozro Pylant, Chester Spence, Carl McManus, Webb McManus, and L.R. Wright. ****************** The Franklin Sun May 18, 1939 Submitted by Karen Sue McNease Riley Roberts Life-Long Resident of Wisner Dies At Daughters Home Riley Roberts, who was born in Wisner and lived the 87 years of his life there died Friday at 1 p.m. in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Cooper, of Wisner. Mr. Riley was born April 8, 1852 and never lived out of the Wisner community, with the exception of two years spent in Florida immediately after his marriage. Mr. Roberts known affectionately to his friends as "Uncle Riley" will always be remembered. A token of the love and esteem in which he was held by his family and friends was shown by the many floral offerings at his funeral. Interment was made in the family cemetery Friday afternoon at four o'clock, with Rev. McLemore, pastor of Holly Grove Baptist church, officiating in the absence of Rev. Odom. The deceased was a member of the Wisner Baptist church. Mr. Roberts is survived by his wife; three children, Spencer Roberts, Wisner; Mrs. Henry Cooper, Wisner, and Mrs. Ross Turner, Ft. Necessity; one step-son, Hogan Batey, Wisner; 21 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.
