S. navy who was reported missing early in March, lost his life in the crash of a seaplane bomber flying from Hawaii to San Diego the night of March 4-5, according to information received here this week. The young former Winnsboro resident, son of Mrs. N. B. McConnell of Alexandria and J. C. Adams, who is in Hawaii, both of the parents being well-known here where they formerly resided, had been on active duty in the naval air corps for a period of 13 months. He was enroute home, on furlough, when the plane was seen to drop out of formation and spiral into the sea. Lieutenant Commander J. O, Kobb, U.S. navy, commanding, wrote to his mother on April 10 as follows: "It is my sad duty to confirm the notice from the navy, stating that your son.. is missing from a flight in the Pacific since March 5... "Thomas was a member of the crew of a seaplane bomber flying from Hawaii to San Diego the night of the fourth to the fifth of March. For some unknown reason, his plane...was seen to drop out of formation and spiraled down into the sea. Extensive Search Made "An extensive sea and air search was conducted in the vicinity of the landing over a period of five days, but no trace of the plane could be found. "It seems possible to us that either due to the prevailing darkness and the rough sea conditions, or due to some structural failure in the plane that the landing was unsuccessful,... that Thomas, with other members of his crew, perished as the plane struck the water. "Thomas' peronal effects were with him in the plane. Inspiration to Associates "Although nothing I could say would lessen this loss of your son, I want you to know he was loved and respected by all of us, and by his shipmates. His courage and devotion to duty during the most difficult campaign in the south Pacific was a sensation to his squadron. I am sure Thomas, had he been required to choose, would have wanted to go as we believe he did, at his post of duty, in his plane, in the service of his country..." The youth was a grandson of Mrs. Kate Lowry and Mrs. W. H. Adams, both of Winnsboro. ---------------------------------------------------- The Franklin Sun Winnsboro, LA April 8, 1943 Submitted May 2009 by: Glenda Warner Boyd Mrs. Blackmon Rites Conducted Saturday Funeral services for Mrs. Fannie Blackmon, 64, were held Saturday afternoon at the Coax church, with the Rev.
