Martin Cpl. James Martin Dies Jap Prisoner Corporal James H. Martin, son of Mrs. Cora Martin, and the late W. A. Martin of Wisner, died somewhere in the Philippines on the 11th of June, the war department announced this week. Corporal Martin, one of hundreds of Franklin parish youths in the service, is the first from the Wisner area who has "given his life" for his country. The war department had previously notified Mrs. Martin her son was captured by the Japanese, probably on the island of Cebu, as that was his base the last time he wrote home. The young soldier was born in Wisner May 3, 1922, and was graduated from Wisner High school in 1939. He entered the army air forces at Barksdale field in October of 1939 and was, in September of the following year, transferred to Savannah, Ga. Two months later, he sailed for the Philippines. At the time of the Jap attack on Pearl Harbor, he was stationed at Manila. A short time afterward, mail was received from him with information he was on Cebu. It was after months of suspense and waiting that his mother received a telegram saying he was a prisoner of war. Corporal Martin was a member of the Wisner Baptist church. He is survived by his mother and four sisters: Mrs. Curtis Tucker, Misses Vivian, Bell and Barbara Nell Martin, all of Wisner. -------------------------------------------------- The Franklin Sun Winnsboro, LA June 24, 1943 Submitted October 2008 by: Glenda Warner Boyd Sergeant James Martin Memorial Services For James Martin Memorial services for Sergeant James Martin, Wisner youth reported to have died as a Jap prisoner in the Philippines, will be held at the Wisner Baptist church Sunday night, June 27 at 8:30 o'clock.
