While there were 10 deaths over the parish an unusually low record--nine of the deceased are women. One negro man, 54 years old, died on June 7. Only two infant deaths occurred during the past 30 days. One of the children was a year old negro girl, the other a white infant who died shortly after birth. The oldest person who died during the past month was a 96 year old negro woman from Ft. Necessity. The oldest white woman was 73 years old. Average age of the white females was 53 years. Average age of the negro females was 55 years. White persons who died during the past month were Lula Jane Botwell, 68, of Winnsboro; Lura Alice Bryant, 59, of near Delhi; Helen Elizabeth Polk, five hours, of Winnsboro; Georgia Cordill Terry, 67, Winnsboro, and Lidia Whitney, 73, of Winnsboro. -------------------------------------------------------- The Franklin Sun Winnsboro, LA July 8, 1948 Submitted November 2008 by: Glenda Warner Boyd Joe Curry Joe Curry Buried With Full Honors By Wisner Legion With full military honors, Joe Curry, Wisner sailor who fell in action in the battle of Leyte in 1944, was buried in his native soil Sunday. Wisner's American Legion burial team conducted the military rites that re-interred the fallen sailor. Young Curry was first buried on Leyte with military honors. He was holder of the citation of meritorius conduct, the presidential citation, the purple heart and six battle stars. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Curry. The burial team of the American Legion is composed of Leon C. Scott, Eldon S. Brown, Lawrence B. Watson, C. C. Dodd, Cecil Vick, Herbert Carroll, Frank Spann, H. P. Sanders, C. L. McDonald, Paul Beach, Louis Rayborn, and E. J. Crawford. The Rev. Howard Hammons conducted the services. ---------------------------------------------------- The Franklin Sun Winnsboro, LA July 8, 1948 Submitted November 2008 by: Glenda Warner Boyd Mary Virginia Williams Polio Victim Dies; Investigation Made Mary Virginia Williams, 10-year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Williams, died at a Vicksburg hospital last week -- Franklin's first victim of Polio in 1948. Death came after medical authorities reported a slight improvement after the child had been placed on an iron lung. Dr. R. J. Reynolds, director of the local health unit, said that an extensive investigation showed no other cases in the parish and that he saw little cause for alarm.The Williams family lived near Delhi. --------------------------------------------------
