John D. Kitchenham, Caldwell parish minister ofiiciating. It was reported that young Burgess, a veteran of World War II, took his own life in the residence of a neighbor from whom he had borrowed the death weapon, a 12-gauge shotgun, Thursday of last week. Deputy Coroner F. C. Shepherds, Richland parish, reported that the victim placed the gun to his heart, pulled the trigger and ended his life almost instantly. Ill health was believed to have been the cause. Burgess is survived by his widow, Mrs. Bobbie Thomason Burgess; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Burgess, Mangham; seven sisters, Mrs. Avis Dear, Baskin, Mrs. Nila Johnston, Mrs. Maud Nell Hays, Mrs. Jessie Vickers and Miss Mytra Reese, all of Memphis, Tenn., Mrs. Bonnie Ruth Graham and Miss Bobbie Jean Burgess, both of Mangham. Pallbearers were Carey King, W. B. Blackman, William Heath, Luther Smart, Alfred Traweek and Grayson Traweek. The Mulhearn Funeral home was in charge of final arrangements. ***************************************** The Franklin Sun Winnsboro, LA January 13, 1949 Submitted by: Glenda Warner Boyd Mrs. Jane Matthews Rites Held Saturday Mrs. Nancy Jane Matthews, 65, a life-long resident of Franklin parish, passed away Friday afternoon at a Winnsboro hospital after a short illness. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock in the Harris cemetery with the Rev. Jessie Hawthorne, pastor of the Lone Cedar Baptist church, officiating. Mrs. Matthews is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Annie Bucher, Winnsboro, Mrs. Bertie Caldwell, Mrs. Gladys Bucher and Miss Leland Matthews, all of Gilbert; four sisters, Mrs. J. T. Mays, Harrisburg, Mrs. Edna Matthews, Ferriday, Mrs. Violet Thacker, Newellton, Mrs. Lizzie Kelly, Jena and three brothers, Tim Reeves, Newellton, J. D. Reeves, Natchez, and Gilbert Reeves, Newellton. Pallbearers were Eddie Matthews, J. T. Thacker, Edward Goynes, Bernis Thacker, C. C. Smith and Ivory Grathon. McCarty Funeral services for John J. McCarty, 70 year-old resident of Winnsboro, were held in the Boeuf River Baptist church Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock with the Rev. T. G. Polk officiating. Interment followed in the Ogden cemetery at Liddieville. Mr. McCarty, a native of Franklin parish, died in a Winnsboro hospital Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lula McCarty, Winnsboro; two daughters, Mrs. Mae Williams Butler, Winnsboro, and Mrs. A. E. Tubberfield, Ruston; one son, Pete McCarty. Pallbearers included Earnest Chevalier, Henry Rolen, Robert Rolen, W. A. J. H. Keyes, pastor of the Lone Pine Baptist church, assisted by Rev. C. B. Hall, pastor of the Winnsboro Baptist church, officiating. Interment followed in the Coax cemetery. Mr. McKinzy was a life-long resident of Franklin parish. He passed away Tuesday in a Winnsboro hospital after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ollie McKinzy; four daughters, Mrs. Allie Guimbellot, Mrs. Bell Glasscock, Mrs. Bonnie Smith and Mrs. Willie Carpenter, all of Winnsboro; three brothers, Allen and Pervis, Ft. Necessity, and Andy McKinzy, of Winnsboro; two sisters, Mrs. Callie Humphries, Winnsboro, and Mrs. Alice Hix, Oak Grove. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Bill Traxler, Loyd Cupps, Percy Newton, Claude Butler, Ora Boutwell and Aubry Carpenter. C. B. White, Ruston, assisted by the Rev. John B. Koelemay, pastor of the Gilbert Methodist church, and the Rev. M. S. Robertson, pastor of the Winnsboro Methodist church, officiating. Interment followed in the new Masonic cemetery at Crowville. Mrs. McManus, a native of Franklin Parish, died in the Winnsboro sanitarium Thursday afternoon of last week. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Mattie Barton and Miss Florence McManus, both of Crowville; five sons, Webb, Claude, Carl and Clyde McManus, all of Crowville, and Ray McManus, Gilbert; four brothers, M. S. Davis, Joe Davis, Troy Davis and Jasper Davis, all of Mississippi; 21 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Bearing the pall were Landis Parker, Royce Parker, Ezra Walters, Pat Harper, Thomas Riser and E. C. Nelson, Warsaw community, with the Rev. Hardy Dunn officiating. The child who died in a Delhi clinic Monday, is survived by, other than his parents, four brothers, Alton D. Jr., Kenneth, James and John Nelson. Arrangements were under the direction of the Mulhearn Funeral home. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Franklin Sun Winnsboro, LA January 6, 1949 Submitted March 2006 by: Glenda Warner Boyd Mrs. Nettie Russel (sic Russell) Salvagio Former Resident Killed in Mishap Thursday, Dec. 30 Mrs. Nettie Russel Salvagio, 40, a former resident of Winnsboro, died as a result of injuries received when she was struck by an automobile while crossing a street in Columbia, S. C., Thursday of last week. Funeral services for Mrs. Salvagio were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Boeuf River Baptist church with the Rev. Louis B. Jones, pastor, officiating. Interment followed in the Ogden cemetery at Liddieville. Mrs. Salvagio, who had moved from Winnsboro to Columbia one year ago, is survived by two sisters, Mrs. S. L. Thompson and Mrs. Mary Hammonds, both of Winnsboro; three brothers, W. Nola Russel and Louis Russel, both of New Orleans, and Ted Russel, Harahan. In charge of final arrangements was the Mulhearn Funeral home. C. B. Hall, pastor of the Winnsboro First Baptist church, officiating. Interment followed in the Ogden cemetery at Liddieville. Mr. Wahls, a native of Germany, who came to Franklin parish in his early manhood, died in a Monroe hospital Thursday of last week.
