Allen John Raymond Fitzgerald Death and serious injury rode the highways of Franklin and Richland parishes during the holidays, killing instantly James B. Allen, 27, route three, Winnsboro, and John Raymond Fitzgerald, 18 , route three, Rayville----adding to the national total of at least 413 traffic fatalities----and injuring seriously Randel Rice, 24, Baskin, and a young couple from San Antonio, Tex. Allen and Fitzgerald were killed around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, when the car in which they were riding on highway 15 near Mangham, crashed into a large truck and trailer driven by Early Miller, a Shreveport negro. According to State Trooper Kit McCain, who investigated the tradegy, the three men were traveling south in a 1939 Ford coach. As they approached the truck driven by Miller, the lights of the Ford went out. The negro, being the only witness to the a ccident, said that just before they reached him, the car swerved from one side of the road to another before smashing into his truck. The automobile was completely demolished, killing Allen and Fitzgerald and seriously injuring Rice. Hurt in the second accident of the night were Mr. and Mrs. Rex P. James, both of San Antonio. Both received treatment in a local clinic as a result of a head-on collision with another car, driven by a Mangham negro, Gains Lyons. The negro pulled his vehicle from a side road into the path of the oncoming James automobile, approximately a quarter of a mile south of Mangham, in Franklin Parish. Trooper McCain stated. Funeral services were held for the Franklin parish youth, Allen on Friday afternoon, Dec. 23, in the Lone Cedar Baptist church at 2 o'clock, with the Rev. A. C. Trapp, pastor, officiating. Interment was in the Lone Cedar cemetery under the direction of the Mulhearn Funeral Home. Allen is survived by his wife, and three children, Jimmie, Sue and Donnie; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Huey Allen, Rayville; two brothers, Hubert Allen, Rayville, and Billy Allen, Gilbert; one sister, Mrs. Marie Olivo, Rayville. The second victim of the accident, Fitzgerald, received final rites on Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 22, in the Coax Baptist church near Baskin, with the Rev. J. H. Hooks, pastor, officiating. Interment followed in the Coax cemetery, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral home. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Fitzgerald of Rayville; a brother, Aubrey Fitzgerald, Mangham and one sister, Mrs. Modine Robbins, Winnsboro. D. Collins Rites Conducted for Mrs. Collins Last rites for Mrs. R. D. Collins, 61, who died Monday, were held Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock in the Gilbert Baptist church. The Rev. H. J. Kamphouse, pastor, officiated. Interment was in the Oakley cemetery near Gilbert. She is survived by her husband, R. D. Collins, Winnsboro; one son, Jewell Collins, Winnsboro; four daughters, Mrs. Gladys Emfinger, Mrs. Lucille Arnold, Mrs. Addie May Rider and Mrs. Annie Lee Kimball, all of Gilbert. She is also survived by seven grandchildren. Pallbearers were Marion Shelton, Richmond Hanks, J. R. Jones, Gillis Emfinger, Elmer Emfinger and George Hewitt. Gates Masonic Funeral Rites Are Conducted Here For James G. Gates Final rites for James G. Gates, 52, well-known Franklin and Madison parishes planter and sportsman, were held in the local Mulhearn chapel Tuesday morning, Dec. 20, 11 o'clock, with the Rev. J. W. Currie, pastor of the Winnsboro Presbyterian church, assisted by the Rev. M. S. Robertson, former pastor of the Winnsboro First Methodist church, officiating. Interment followed in the "old" Winnsboro cemetery, with Masonic rites conducted by the Winnsboro lodge, No.246, F. and A.M., of which he served as worshipful master for the 1948 and 1949 terms. The prominent planter-sportsman and former Winnsboro merchant was born October 4, 1897, in Iberia parish. He had been a resident of this parish since 1923. In addition to his civic and fraternal affiliations, Mr. Gates was a veteran of the first world war. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Alfred and Richard, Winnsboro, and daughter, Miss Doris Gates. Pallbearers were W.W. Eckhardt, J. H. Furr. L. L. Miller, S. Ellerman, J. H. Walters, George Wiggers, Floyd Brown and Charles Nelson. Humble Funeral Services Are Held Tuesday Burial services for George W. Humble, 69, prominent Franklin parish planter and merchant, were held at 10:30 Tuesday morning at the Mangham Baptist church with the Rev. C. W. Jones, Jr., and the Rev. Steve Carrington officiating. Interment followed at the Gwin cemetery. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Margertie Marlowe and Mrs. Annette Coolidge, both of Mangham; two grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Henrietta King; one brother, S. R. Humble, Sr., also of Mangham. Pallbearers were S.R. Humble, Jr., Bill Humble, Jake King, Ola Carter, Massey D. McConnell, Regie Lowery, Clara King, all nephews. Honorary pallbearers were: Dr. C. E. Loflin is Interred Tuesday Final rites for William H. Loflin, 66, well-known parish resident, who died at a local sanitarium Monday, were held in the Salem Baptist church in Eros at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon, with the Rev. Roy Gordan, pastor of the Winnsboro New Zion Baptist church, assisted by the Rev. J. T. Garrett of Eros, officiating. Interment followed in the Salem cemetery near Eros. In addition to his widow, he is survived by eight sons, Gullen Loflin, Monroe, Hansford, Winnsboro; Jacob E., U.S air force; Bernon O., Willet, Calif.; James A. and W.H., Jr., of Winnsboro; Raymond N., Dallas, Tex.; Harvell D., Tallulah; three daughters, Mrs. Robert West of Monroe, Misses Duane and Loney Loflin of Winnsboro. He is also survived by two brothers, six sisters, 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Martin, 56, who died Monday at 2 o'clock, Tuesday afternoon in the Crowville Methodist church, with the Rev. Steve Carrington, pastor, officiating. Interment followed in the Crowville "new" cemetery. Mrs. Martin is survived by her husband, one son, R. N. Martin, Jr., Winnsboro; two daughters, Mrs. May Rhodes and Minnie Cain, both of Crowville. She is also survived by eight grandchildren.
