McCarty Dies in Sikes Home Funeral services were conducted Wednesday in the Hurricane Grove church, near Sikes, for Walter G. McCarty, 72 year-old retired farmer and stockman of Sikes. He died Tuesday in his home. Mr. McCarty is survived by one son, Daniel McCarty, Sikes; four brothers, C. A. McCarty, Sikes, D. S. McCarty, St. Joseph, H. M. and C. C. McCarty, both of Winnsboro; two grandsons, also of Sikes, and one sister, Mrs. Gaines Richardson. Mrs. Lamar E. Little of Winnsboro is a niece of the deceased. *********************************** The Franklin Sun Winnsboro, LA January 3, 1952 Submitted September 2006 by: Glenda Warner Boyd Final Interment for War Casualty Sgt. James D. Nichols The body of a Franklin parish soldier -- Sgt. James D. Nichols, son of Mr. and Mrs. I. L. Nichols -- was returned for final reburial Sunday night. He was killed in action in Korea last August 27 while serving with the 32nd Infantry regiment, seventh division. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock in the Winnsboro Pentecostal church with the Rev. J. A. Hawthorne, pastor, officiating. Interment followed in the Ogden cemetery under the direction of the Mulhearn Funeral home. Military rites were conducted by members of the Hanna-Richardson V.F.W. and Diamond-Hawthorne American Legion posts of Winnsboro. The body of the returned soldier arrived Sunday night accompanied by a military escort. Sergeant Nichols attended the Ogden High school and entered the military service November 17, 1948, taking his basic training at Camp Chaffee, Ark. He was later, in January, 1950, moved to Japan and on to Korea in October of that year. He is survived by his parents, four brothers, Grady Leon of Liddieville, Richard Leo of Winnsboro, Joe Cecil of Lone Cedar and Alvie Ray, at home; two sisters, Mary Katherine and Erma Lee Nichols, at home; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Nichols Sr., and maternal grandmother, Mrs. Martha Ann Peoples, Winnsboro. Sgt. Nichols was the eighth parish Korean war casualty. Since his death in August three others have been killed to the "incident" at the hands of the Red Chinese. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
