Buie, 73, Fort Necessity planter, were conducted at Boeuf Prairie Methodist church at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. R. K. Friedrich, officiated. Mr. Buie, member of a pioneer Franklin parish family, died Monday morning in a local hospital. Born at Fort Necessity on March 2, 1886, Mr. Buie had served as principal of Mellville and DeRidder High School and was a past superintendent of education in Allen parish. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Helen Voorhies Buie; two brothers, Jim Buie of Fort Necessity and Dr. Neil D. Buie of Monroe; three sisters; Mrs. Effie Wedgeworth, Ruston, Mrs. J. R. Downs, Houston, Tex., and Miss Fannie Buie, San Francisco, Calif. Active pallbearers were Henry Price, John Richard Downs, Charles Buie, Woodrow Turner, Frank Baxter and R. S. Bonner. The Franklin Sun January 21, 1960 Edward Lee Burns A lifetime resident of Baskin community, Edward Lee Burns, died at the age of 60 Sunday in a Monroe Hospital. A farmer by occupation, Mr. Burns was born November 7, 1899, and was a member of Pleasant Hale Baptist church. Funeral services were conducted at Pleasant Hale Baptist church on Tuesday, January 19, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Bob Nobles and C.M. Jenkins officiating. Burial was in New Pleasant Hale cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Irma Fletcher Burns, Baskin; a daughter, Mrs. Irma Lee Carter, Baton Rouge; three sons, Ronnie Burns, Monroe, and Jerry and Donald Ray Burns, both of Baskin; four sisters, Mrs. M. L. Batey, Wisner, Mrs. C.C. Temple, Winnsboro, Mrs. R.P. Stewart, Baskin, and Mrs. Ester B. Fuller, Lake Charles, a brother, Guy Burns, Baskin; and three grandchildren. Carpenter Final rites for Pinkney Arthur Carpenter retired farmer of Winnsboro, took place at 2 p.m. January 26 at the Rayville church of Christ. Eighty four years old, Mr. Carpenter was born March 8, 1875 in Louisiana. He was a member of the Rayville church of Christ. Death came January 25 at a local rest home. Mr. Carpenter leaves three sons, Arthur Carpenter, Winnsboro, Aubrey Carpenter, Holly Ridge, and J. D. Carpenter, Minden; a daughter, Mrs. Lena Adams, Start; two brothers, Chester Carpenter, Marlon and Emmett Carpenter, Loraine, Tx.; 16 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Raymond George, James M. Carpenter, Lewis Carpenter, John Parker, and Orland Adams. The Rev. Hudson Nichols officiated at funeral services assisted by the Rev. Joe Mongle. The Rev. Finley Patton assisted by the Rev. Ron Wilkins, officiated. A retired housewife, Mrs. Casteel was born May 6, 1883 at Bearden, Ark. Death followed a lengthy illness on January 16 at Rogers clinic, Winnsboro. Mrs. Casteel was a member of First Presbyterian church of Winnsboro. She leaves her husband J. A. Casteel, Winnsboro, four daughters, Mrs. Lucille Carpenter and Mrs. Edna Mae Meyer, both of Winnsboro. Mrs. Helen C. Berry, Oakdale, and Mrs. Lola Gardiner, Opelousas; a son James A. Coughran, 81, died January 11 at his home in Start. A native of Newton County, Miss., Mr. Coughran had made his home at Start for 12 years. He was a member of Start Baptist church. Final rites were held at Start Baptist church at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The Revs. E. L. Hayles, Joe Mongle and J. S. Deal officiated. Interment followed in Start Cemetery. Mr. Coughran is survived by four sons, Amos of Start, Earl and Jack of Winnsboro and M-Sgt. Norris Coughran of the United States army; five daughters, Miss Ruthie Coughran and Mrs. Troy Adams, both of Start, Mrs. Frank Wiltshire and Mrs. W. M. Te Rev. Ronald Wilkens officiated. Born December 20, 1896 at Baskin, Mr. Elliot died January 4 at Rogers Clinic. He was a veteran of World War I and a member of Masonic lodge of Cotton Valley. He was 72 years old. A native of Wesson, Miss., Mr. Evans was a member of Pine Hill Baptist church, near Sicily Island. He had lived at Sicily Island for 35 years. Funeral arrangements were incomplete this morning, but interment will be in Pine Hill cemetery. Surviving Mrs. Evans are; four sons, Leon and Eugene Evans, both of Houston, Tex., J. B. Evans, Sicily Island, and Preston Evans, Winnsboro; three daughters, Mrs. Patsy Walters, Leesville, Mrs. Virginia McNeese and Mrs. J. R. Floyd Jr. James P. Floyd Jr., one month old infant son of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Floyd, Sr. of Urania, died December 30 at a New Orleans hospital. He had been ill since birth, on November 28. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at First National Funeral home chapel, with the Rev. David Mayo officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery near Winnsboro. Aucoin of Shreveport; paternal grandmother is Mrs. Ruby Guimbellot of Winnsboro. *************************** The Franklin Sun January 21, 1960 Dr. Larkin Ryan Hemler Dr. Larkin Ryan Hemler died at 2 p.m. Wednesday at his home in Alto after a brief illness. He was 69 years old. A native of Richland parish, Dr. Hemler had maintained a dental office in Winnsboro for many years and was well known here. He had lived at Alto for 30 years, in Monroe for 12 years and in Mer Rouge for 15 years. Dr. Hemler was a veteran of both World Wars I and II, a member of Mer Rouge Masonic lodge, vice president of the Monroe district dental society and a member of First Baptist church of Alto. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Bennie F. Hemler, Alto; two daughters, Mrs. Earl Stoval, Monroe, and R. T. Stowell, Jr., Leerfield Beach, fla.; a son, L. R. Hemler, Jr., Missoula, Mont.; a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Adcock, Shreveport; and five granddaughters. Funeral arrangements are incomplete, pending arrivals of out of town relatives. McClendon officiating; Interment was in Coax cemetery. Ben McCoy A prominent business man of Gilbert, J. Ben McCoy, died Wednesday in a Monroe, hospital after a long illness. Sixty-six years old, Mr. McCoy was born December 22, 1883. As a small boy he moved to Gilbert with his parents. He was a member of Gilbert Methodist church, El Karubah temple, and a charter member of Dan Gilbert lodge, No. 405 F&AM. funeral services were held at Gilbert Methodist Church at 1 p.m. today, with the Rev. R. K. Friedrich officiating. Interment followed in Oak Ridge cemetery. Mr. McCoy is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lillian Craig McCoy, Gilbert, and a sister, Mrs. Ella Gilbert, Winnsboro. Mecom Final rites for Dr. William A. Mecom, practicing physician in Wisner for almos 50 years were held at 3 p.m., Monday at Wisner Methodist church. The Rev. A.W. Coody officiated. Eighty-seven years old, Dr. Mecom died January 17 at the home of a son in Jackson, La., where he had made his home since 1952 when his wife died. Active in civic and church affairs in Wisner, Dr. Mecom had served as member of the Wisner board of aldermen and on both the oficial board and the board of trustees of the Methodist church. Surviving him are two sons, Dr. Wilbur E. Mecom, Jackson, and Russell S. Mecom, Jackson and Russell S. Mecom, Hebert; a sister, Mrs. W. S. Culpepper, Monroe; and a brother, Phillip Mecom, Shreveport. Mock, Sr. of Baskin at the age of 61 years on Saturday in a Vicksburg, Miss., hopital. Postmaster for 22 years at Baskin, he was a rural mail carrier at the time of his death. Mr. Mock was born March 3, 1898 at Mangham, and was a member of Baskin Baptist church and Winnsboro Masonic Lodge. No. 246, F&AM. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. J.C. McLendon and C.M. Jenkins at Baskin Baptist church Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Special Masonic services followed at the graveside in the Mock family cemetery in Baskin. Mr. Mock is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary E. He was on his job as milk routeman at the time of the attack. He is survived by a wife, Agnes, and one child. funeral services were at 2 p.m. today at Coax Baptist church, with the Rev. Alvin Littleton officiating. Burial was at Coax Baptist Cemetery. ****************************************** The Franklin Sun January 21, 1960 Thomas Michael and Robert Glenn Tanner Thomas Michael and Robert Glenn two-day-old twin sons of Mr. and Mrs. Brodie Tanner of Alexandria; died early this week at St. Francis Cabrini hospital in Alexandria. They were born Sunday at the hopital, 7 1/2 weeks prematurely. Graveside sevices for the twins were held at Old Winnsboro cemetery at 10:30 Wednesday. The Rev. John Mulkeen of St. Mary's Catholic Church officiated. In addition to their parents Thomas and Robert are survived by a brother, Steven, two years old; paternal grandmother, Mrs. J. R. Ray, Ruston; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Vinco Herlevic of Winnsboro; and a number of cousins, uncles and aunts. Mrs. Tanner the former Miss Barbara Herlevic of Winnsboro, is reported doing well, but was unable to travel to Winnsboro for services. ********************* The Franklin Sun January 28, 1960 Mrs. Rosie V.
