In 1885 Mr. King helped a neighbor, John Mason, build the first school building in their Franklin Parish community. With the help of his brothers, John and Mack, he constructed the first Methodist church building in Winnsboro on the spot where the present First Methodist Church stands. The years before his retirement were filled with hard work and active participation in parish government and civic affairs. He served on the Franklin Parish School Board for 28 years, from October 3, 1896, to January 1, 1925. He was awarded a life membership, a 50-year certificate and pin by the Winnsboro Lodge No. 246, F&A.M. In 1960, Ogden High School recognized "Uncle Jim" by dedicating its yearbook to him for "his tremendous interest in, and many years of service to, the schools of Franklin Parish." On his 112th birthday, Uncle Jim gave his formula for longevity, as "working hard, keeping regular hours, and never using tobacco in any form." ------------------------------------------------------- The Franklin Sun Winnsboro, LA June 29, 1967 Submitted July 2009 by: Glenda Warner Boyd Wm.
