Ellerbe, Sr. John Gilbert Higgs Sr. ********************************************** ********************************************** The Franklin Sun Winnsboro, LA January 7, 1971 Submitted May 2009 by: Glenda Warner Boyd Mrs. Sophia Armstrong Mrs. Sophia Maria Armstrong, 83, of Winnsboro, died Friday at King's Guest Home here after a long illness. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wayside Pentecostal Church with the Rev. W. H. Hemphill officiating, assisted by the Rev. Jessie Boothe. Burial was in New Winnsboro Cemetery. Survivors include four sons, George Henry Armstrong, Charlie Armstrong, H. W. Armstrong, all of Winnsboro, and Joe Armstrong of Alexandria; three daughters, Mrs. Laura Mae Parks, Mrs. Mary Sullivan and Mrs. Lois Priest, all of Winnsboro; a half-sister, Mrs. Julian Parker Sr. of Winnsboro; 22 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild. ------------------------------------------------------ The Franklin Sun Winnsboro, LA January 7, 1971 Submitted May 2009 by: Glenda Warner Boyd Hogan W. Batey Funeral services for Hogan W. Batey, 72, Wisner, were held last week at King's Pentecostal Church in Wisner. Burial was in King's cemetery. Mr. Batey died Wednesday at his residence after a short illness. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Willie Mae Batey of Wisner; two sons, Warnie M. Batey of Wisner and James Earl Batey of Port Allen; a daughter, Mrs. Edna Adams also of Port Allen; a step-brother, Spencer Roberts of Wisner; two step-sisters, Mrs. Henry Cooper of Wisner and Mrs. Ross Turner of Ft. Ellerbe, Sr. Funeral services for Judson Carey Ellerbe Sr., 81, of Winnsboro, were held Christmas Day at the Temple Baptist Church here with the Revs. Randall Sledge and Joe Mongle officiating. Burial was in Oakley cemetery. Mr. Ellerbe, a retired employee of the Missouri-Pacific Railroad Company, was a member of Temple Baptist Church. He died at his home December 24. Mr. Ellerbe who was born in 1889 in Adams County, Miss., is survived by his wife, Mrs. Martha Ellerbe, Winnsboro; a son, J. C. Ellerbe, Winnsboro; three daughters, Mrs. Jack Cruse and Mrs. Jack Coughran, both of Winnsboro, and Mrs. John Winters, Monroe, a brother, Vernon L. Ellerbe of Monroe, and six grandchildren. Pallbearers were J. B. Smith, J. P. C. (sic G.) Higgs Sr. John Gilbert Higgs Sr., 73, father of Mrs. Charles Ray (LaVeta) Price, succumbed to a long illness on December 27, 1970. Mrs. Price has taught school in Franklin Parish for many years. Other survivors include his widow, Mrs. Vernila Moffett Higgs, who is now making her home with Mrs. Price; a son, John G. Higgs, Jr., of Coushatta; another daughter, Mrs. Harry (LaVerne) Knight of Portland, Oregon; five brothers, four sisters, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A native of Dodson in Winn Parish, Mr. Higgs had lived in Richland Parish since 1929, where he had farming interests north of Holly Ridge and owned business properties in Rayville. The Rev. Robert Miller, assisted by the Rev. Harrison Cockerham, officiated at the funeral services which were held in the Chapel of First National Funeral Home in Winnsboro on December 30.
