He was a graduate of Louisiana State University of Shreveport, a veteran having served in the U.S. Navy and was a retired Merchant Seaman. Mr. Smith was a three time State Champion of the Louisiana Checkers Association, a member of the American Checkers Federation, tied for first place and won second place at National GAYP Checker Championship in Minor Division at Anderson, South Carolina in August of 2003. Known to many as "Tiny Bo", Mary was born on September 7, 1932 in Franklin Parish. She attended Winnsboro High School where she served as a cheerleader. She graduated from Neville High School in Monroe, Louisiana, where she also served as a cheerleader. Mary was a graduate of Northeast Louisiana University where she obtained a degree in elementary education with a Masters +30. While a student at Northeast, Mary served as a NLU cheerleader and was a founding member and a first president of the Phi Mu Sorority. Mary was in educator for 42 years, teaching in both public and private schools in Jefferson and Franklin Parish and the Monroe City School System. Mary introduced the Spalding Method of teaching in the Franklin Parish School System. She taught the 1 and 2 year old Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church of Winnsboro for 30 years. A true lover of tennis, Mary served as a tennis coach at Fort Necessity High School for two years and was the co-founder of the tennis program at Winnsboro High School in 1982. A believer in the importance of arts, Mary was a co-founder of the Franklin Youth Theatre where she served as a director. She had a starring role as Clairee in the performance of Steel Magnolias at the Princess Theatre in Winnsboro. Mary served as chairperson of the Franklin Parish Junior Miss Program for 15 years. She was awarded the best local program of the year at the State Junior Miss Program. She was awarded the most creative fundraising project at the State Junior Miss Program and was awarded the outstanding chairperson at the at the State Junior Miss Program 2003-2004. Mary's passion was the Junior Miss Organization. The 15 years she served as local chair, she had the opportunity to have a positive impact on many young women. The Junior Miss Organization promotes the "Be Your Best Self Program," and Mary was a living example, always striving to be her best self. Mary is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Warner of Monroe; and Tara Kathleen Crowley of Winnsboro; grandchildren, Mary Kathryn Warner Smith and Joshua Barclay Warner II, both of Monroe; one sister and brother-in-law, Bobbie and Elmo Blackmon of Winnsboro; one brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Mona Meredith of Monroe; five nieces and two nephews. Survivors include three children, Doris June Dooley of Delhi, John Lawrence Fletcher of Denver, Colorado; Dan Lynne Fletcher of Rowlett, Texas; 15 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Bonnie Iris Gardner Fuqua Bonnie Iris Gardner Fuqua, 76, of Gilbert died at Franklin Medical Center, Thursday after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Fuqua was born in Mendenhall, Mississippi, in 1927, the only daughter of Eris and Ada Gardner, and learned early her appreciation of music, while performing with her parents' traveling vaudeville tent show. Soon she was entertaining all over the south with her piano talents. Her late travels, playing piano, took her all over the United States, including Hawaii, where she played for exclusive hotels and Officer's Clubs. Not long ago, she was featured pianist at the Eola Hotel in Natchez, where she pounded out everything from jazz, to standards, to classics. One of the highlights of her music career was serving as a sponsor and charter member of the historic Women's Jazz Festival in Kansas City, Mo., where she performed alongside such jazz greats as Marian McPartland. Mrs. Fuqua was a piano purist, with a true appreciation toward jazz. She once said, "Jazz isn't like other music...I find jazz always new with a language all its own - and that language is hard to interpret, like a painting. It's seen differently every time." She loved Gershwin, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington,Rogers and Hammerstein-- but reveled in and encouraged fresh young talent. She also loved her animals, her flowers and her Great Books. The family requests that any memorials be made to an animal shelter of their choice or to Gilbert First United Methodist Church, 119 Hanna Street, Gilbert, Louisiana 71336. Mrs. Fuqua is preceded in death by her husband, Feliz McCuddy Fuqua and her father, E.K. Gardner. She is survived by her mother, Ada Hatton Gardner of Wisner; one daughter, Kay Williams LaFrance of Monroe; one step-granddaughter, Cynthie LaFrance Taylor and her twins, Alec and Aubrie of Arlington, Texas; aunt and uncle, Wiggins and Bernice Hatton of Gilbert; and a host of cousins. A memorial service was held Saturday in the chapel of Gill First National Funeral Home of Winnsboro, officiated by Brother Bill Moon and Brother Bill Foster. Mr. Boyle, age 77, of Winnsboro passed away on Monday, Sept. 15, 2003. He was a lifetime resident of Winnsboro and a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church of Winnsboro. Mr. Boyle was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and WW II, where he served in the Pacific theatre of operations aboard the attack transport, USS Menifee (AP202). As a member of a 3-man LCM boat crew, he participated in the invasion of Okinawa and the occupation of Japan and received the Philippine Liberation Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal and World War II Victory Medal. After the war, he worked for Homer Lowry as an electrician apprentice and Sustan Garment Factory. He worked as a projectionist for the Princess and Lion Drive-In Theaters before becoming manager of both facilities in 1961. He was a member of the American Legion, Veteran of Foreign Wars and former member of Box Office Exhibitors. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Amy and Joseph Boyle; brothers, Earl and Edward Boyle; and a sister, Stella. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Elsie Boyle; sister, Lillian Cleo Conterman of Plantation Manor Nursing Facility of Winnsboro; his son and daughter-in-law, Davis and Anna Boyle of Biloxi, Miss.; grandson, Hospitalman Second Class(SW) (AW) Christopher R. Roberts A memorial service for Harold R. Roberts, 63, of Columbia will be held at 5 p.m. today September 17, 2003 at Crowville High School Gymnasium in Crowville. Mr. Roberts was born on November 23, 1939 at Delhi to the union of his parents, Willard Guy and Mercille Dixon Roberts Sr. He was a retired janitor and bus driver with the Franklin Parish School System, having been employed at the Crowville High School. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister. Mr. Roberts was known as a good Samaritan in helping widow women and his friends in any way he could.
