He was born on March 11, 1936, to the union of James Elbert and Willie Mae Ainsworth. He was a retired river boat captain and a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend to all who knew him. Services were held Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, at The New Ouachita Baptist Church in Enterprise, with the Rev. Emile Bordelon and the Rev. Perry Gardner officiating. You have taken the fire and out of it fashioned the numberless lamps that decorate the night." Hazel Talbert Cowan, 84, passed away Nov. 25, 2009, at her home in Walker, La. Hazel never lost her zeal to survive and fought her ill health courageously. Mrs. Cowan grew up in the country farming community of Swampers, La. Following a stint as a Navy certified welder in New Orleans, La., during World War II, she worked for the Rural Electric Authority in Winnsboro, until the mid-1960s. At that time she and her husband, Jesse K. Cowan Sr., started J.K. Cowan, Sr. Contracting Company selling and hauling construction materials (dirt, sand and gravel) in Denham Springs, La., which she headed until the day she passed. She will be missed by her family, friends, and everyone who ever had the pleasure of knowing her. She brought adventure to us all with her zest for life and her ability to be plain-spoken. She had a will of iron, a heart of gold and a knack for sharing stories from her past. Hensley Mervin L. Hensley, 83, of Fort Necessity, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, after a lengthy illness. He was born to the union of the late Clayton and Lizzie Bell Cherene Hensley on March 17, 1926, in Mansfield, La. He married Evelyn O. Booker on February 9, 1946 in Mansfield and relocated to Fort Necessity in 1965. Mr. Hensley served his country in WWII. He retired from Tennessee Gas Pipeline Co. in June 1986. He spent his retired years enjoying his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, fishing, gardening and hunting. He was a member of Fort Necessity Baptist Church, a veteran of the US Army, and a former Mason. Mr. Lachney was born Feb. 1, 1922 at Echo, La. to Shelton and Mellie (Guillot) Lachney. His parents died before he was 14 years old. He moved to Franklin Parish in 1936 to live with his grandfather, Poulan Guillot. He joined the CC camp in 1939, earning $1 per day. He started ironworking in 1941. Edwin married Thada Ray Aymond, June 7, 1942, then was drafted into the army later that year and served three years. He went back to ironworking in 1945 and retired after 38 years in 1983. He is still a member of Ironworkers Local until this day. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Elzy Antoine Lachney, Tanza Joseph Lachney, and Ulysses P. Lachney. A memorial service celebrating his life was held Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, at Warwick Memorial United Methodist Church in Newport News. Officiating was Rev. Carole Stockberger, his minister and special friend, assisted by Rev. Bill Davidson. Services were under the direction of Altmeyer Funeral Home, Newport News, Va. Mr. Rountree was born Feb. 1, 1938 in Beaumont, Texas. He later moved to Louisiana where he spent his youth and attended school. He was a graduate of Jefferson Military Academy in Natchez, Miss. and attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, from 1956- 1957. Following four years of military service in the Navy, he returned to Louisiana, enrolling in Northeast Louisiana State University Pharmacy School. He began his pharmacy career in Winnsboro affiliating himself with King Drug Store in 1965. In 1971 he purchased King Drug Store and operated it until 1981. From 1981 until 1987 He did pharmacy relief at various pharmacies in North Louisiana as well as Franklin Parish Hospital. He became Director of Pharmacy at Franklin Parish Hospital in the late 80's and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1993. Retirement gave him the opportunity and time to explore and enjoy his hobbies of fishing and sailing. In 1993 Harry and his wife Charlene moved to Newport News, to be close to the ocean. The years he spent in this beautiful area were very special to Harry and he found opportunities to continue utilizing his pharmacy profession by serving as pharmacist at Riverside Hospital in Newport News until 2004, at which time he retired and spent his time traveling and enjoying his free time. Always a quiet and stoic gentleman Harry gently gave stability and friendship to all who were lucky enough to know him. To both his family and friends he was that ever present loyal and funny person who seemed to always know the right thing to say or do. He dealt with his illness just as he did with his life Ñ with a positive and reassuring attitude. Mr. Rountree was preceded in death by his parents Laurine and Harry Rountree, and his daughter Diane Rountree Wells. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Charlene Bryant Rountree of Newport News; daughter, Millicent Rountree, Newport News; son, Bryant Rountree and his wife Cheri of McMinnville, Oregon; two grandchildren, Joshua Russell and Holly Russell of Winnsboro; sisters: Linda Gammill and husband, Gene of Oak Grove; Besty Bankston and husband Vernon of Oak Grove; and Bertha Adams and husband John of Fernandina Beach, Fla., as well as several nieces and nephews.
