Smith was superintendent of the Tremont & Gulf Railroad, officially head quartered at Winnfield, Louisiana. He began his railroad career as an axman with the engineering corps during preliminary construction of the rail line. He was born at Pollock, Grant Parish, Louisiana, December 5, 1886, son of William L. and Jane Lee Smith. Mrs. Smith was a sister to Colonel Swords Lee. William L. Smith was a farm industry representative in Grant Parish when he assumed the position of trackman for the Big Creek Lumber Company, having charge of the laying of track for logging railroads for the company. He later became supervisor of highway maintenance in Winn Parish. He was born in Winn Parish, in 1864, and Mrs. Smith was born in Mississippi. Mr. Smith also worked for the Germain-Boyd Lumber Company at Atlanta, Winn Parish, after he left the Big Creek Lumber Company. He next took a position with the Tremont & Gulf Railroad. He was a loyal democrat and he and his wife active Baptists. The children of William L. and Jane Lee Smith were Albert L., the eldest, Henry H., an artillery man in the United State Army during World War I, L. Houston, who also served in the World War as a radioman, James I., who was in officers' school when the World War ended, and later attended Tulane Law School, and Mattie Lou, wife of A. L. Ladner, a store owner at Joyce, Winn Parish, Louisiana. Albert L. was educated in local schools and worked with the civil engineering department of the Big Creek Lumber Company. He served in positions such as axman, rodman, dispatcher, chief dispatcher, train master, and finally as superintendent. Albert was a loyal democrat and served on the Winnfield City Council and as chairman of the street committee. He was a member of Eastern Star Masonic Lodge, Winnfield, and Bethlehem Commandery, York Rite Masons, Shreveport Scottish Rite, and the El Karubah Shrine. He and his wife were earnest members of the First Baptist Church, Winnfield, and he was a teacher of the Men's Bible Class. Mr. Smith married Jeannette Ottice Barnes, daughter of Osey and Nancy Barnes. Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Winnfield High School. Their children were Albert L., Jr., Marjorie Elaine, and Leonard Ashley. Mrs. Smith was a member of Winnfield's Eastern Star Chapter.
