Cemetery: French Cemetery (D'Artigo), Grant Parish La Submitted to USGENWEB - by Evelyn Corbett Cunningham, 9457 E. Read July 28, 1999 By Evelyn Corbett Cunningham This is an old one. It reads like a history book. It was originally know as D'Artigo. I don't know when the name changed. It was still listed as D'Artigo on death certificates and Obits for some of my relatives in the 1950s and 1960s. My Great Aunt Jewel BreedLove Sharbino told me that it got the name D'Artigo from people chasing hogs and hollering "Dart they go." Some of the stones are so old that they are totally unreadable. It is very well maintained and even has a swing under a tree. It is extremely isolated. I have copied the stones just like I read them, so if there are any mistakes please forgive them. Also some of the double stones have wedding dates on them, which I found to be unusual. (*Note added by Gaytha Thompson: My father in law, Arles Thompson, told me that the road to the cemetery would flood and that they were unable to bury there. When the road was flooded the burial would take place at Aloha Cemetery on Hwy 71. The road is a red dirt road and even now when it rains it's almost impassable unless you have a 4 wheel drive or truck.) Additional Notes about burials at bottom of page. Please add them to the cemetery listing. They used to have a little stone at the head of their graves to mark them. I haven't been out there in a while so I don't know if they're still there. ===================================================== *Notes Submitted to USGENWEB - by Gaytha Thompson ANTEE, Josephine Dubois - unmarked or may be marked by iron cross. His plot has an iron cross on it. It is hard to read, but when you walk in the gate, he is buried in left back of the cemetery. There are about 4 or 5 iron crosses in a row and he is the third I think It reads: Vallery, J. B.T.E. F. D. de..... July 15, 1853. I just visited the cemetery Sat, Oct 10, 1999 to see for my self.
