All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: Personal records/censuses, records of/interviews with ( BE Melton, Mrs. Charlotte Melton McFarland, Johnnie E. Moore ), prior US censuses, records of Winn/Grant Parish and US BLM land deed records. Tyson (Revision No. 3) 08/15/2000 Note: Original (8/1999) version of "Tyson Cemetery" was compiled using information available then. Writer has since obtained US homestead and patent deed records not available locally then. These records track land acquisitions & settlement of Tysons and Allbrights back to 8/1837. They verify actual settlement locations of separate Tyson family groups and caused some family schedules to be revised to conform with new data. Revision No. 2 has been updated after new information was found reference parents of James E. Tyson. This revision also conforms to new formatting requirements of the Winn Parish USGENWEB site. Cemetery census has been revised to show relationship of persons buried here to provide more information to persons looking for information on ancestors. Revision No. 3 was done after obtaining family data from the William S. Tyson Family Bible ca. 1830 and a copy of a family deposition made in 1910 by Zilpha E. Nugent, g/d of William Tyson. This data identified the wives of James E. Tyson and other missing information. Following is a listing of history events/background information reference the Tyson Cemetery. Spelling has also been Tison - earliest & accepted use of Tyson is used for this article. All Winn Parish (estb.1852) records from period were lost in a courthouse fire of 1868. Courthouse burned again in 1886 after it was moved to Winnfield. Winn records do not predate 1889. Grant parish records go back to 1868 and do not cover the original period of settlement of this area. Federal land records, 1865 direct tax records and 1850/1860/1870/1880 census records were reviewed. The writer's grandfather (BE Melton 1889 - 1979) was a son of Louisiana Laurette (Laura) Tyson (1856 - 1935), a third generation Tyson. He lived next to the Cemetery location from 1908 - 1979. He had previously made mention of a second group of Tysons descended from the original settler and that they had moved into south area of Grant Parish. New land records show that the original settlement location was in lower Grant Parish prior to 1837, with a later group moving to the Tyson Cem area before 1859. The Tyson Cemetery is located in the SE/4 of NE/4, Sec 6,T9N,R2W Grant Parish. Location is 374' West and 620' North of the SE corner of SE-NE. Information from survey plat. Prior to 1868, it was located in Winn Parish. Cemetery is West of US 167 off USFS Rd. 613A. Tract is located on a bluff next to Bear Creek and never floods. It is surrounded by USFS land. The old Harrisonburg - Natchitoches Rd. (E-W) used by early migrating settlers crosses Bear Creek at a creek ford just North of the Cemetery. Ruts left by wagon wheels are still visible at creek ford approaches and adjacent Tyson home/blacksmith shop area. Road ran E-W along the present Winn/Grant line until it reached the common corner of Secs 5/6 and 32/31, then it went southwesterly by the Cemetery through the later GW Moore property in NW/4 - Sec 6 towards the St. Maurice area. It crossed through the southern part of the old Allbright Prarie area now in Winn Parish. Parts of this road were used until the late 1910's, as it was the only East to West travel route across this border area. The present Winnfield - Alexandria Old Military Road (gravel) PR 406 that goes South through Sec 35 T10N R3W previously ran South from Winnfield through Sec 17 T10N R2W on to Sec 31, crossing into Grant Parish at the SW corner of Sec 31 and following the section line between Sec 6 R2W and Sec 1 R3W. This was the property line between later Sally Hagen and GW Moore property and 0.5 mile West of the Tyson Cem. Then it ran South to the center of Sec 31 T9N near USFS Roads 155/558 intersection, then through John A. Allbright property in NW/4 of Sec 8. It passed by Liberty Chapel and merged at the present US 167 location at Williana. Road was used until US 167 was built from Winnfield to Alexandria. All North - South early travel followed this route. The Allbrights lived on the Allbright Prarie area in Secs 1,2 & 3 in T9N, R3W Winn Parish. Family home was located in the NE/4 of Sec 2, some 1.5 miles from Tysons. This was the location of the earliest Winn Parish courthouse that burned in 1868. Laura Tyson bought (11/11/1895) the NE/4 and NE-NW of Sec 2 (200 acres) from Benjamin, John A. and Mary Allbright for $150. The Tysons had a home and blacksmith shop located some 50 yards northwest of the cemetery. Visible signs of the homeplace (8/1999) include crepe myrtle trees, old cedar tree stumps, well depression and iron horseshoes located near the blacksmith shop area. The center core of a large white oak tree that fell about 1990 is still there. BE Melton and JE Moore noted this as forge location used to repair wagon rims. Cemetery sign erected by the writer in 1987 denotes "Tyson Cemetery Est. 1889". Earliest burial marked by headstone was in 1894. However, members of the Allbright/Tyson families were buried here for many years prior to 1900. The father of Laura Tyson and his wives, along with Mary Allbright are buried in unmarked graves. Burial of Mary Allbright about 1912 is verified by JE Moore, who was living on the GW Moore property adjacent. Tyson slaves (?) also buried here, as per BE Melton. He may have been referring to Cudjah & Emeline Tyson, shown on 1870 census, but not listed on 1860 slave census - they may have been freed prior. Inner burial area has been chainlink fenced for many years. When clearing brush to run a perimeter fence in 1985, remanants of an old field wire fence were found. Covered shed over the eating table area was erected by Lynn Melton & JE Moore prior to 1970. 1870 Census of Allbright & Tyson Family members living in Winn: Allbright Tyson Household-Name-DOB Household-Name-DOB 5-10 William S 1821 5-15 Cudjah 1810 Ga Black " Elnora L 1845 " Emeline 1820 Va " " Allise 1855 " " Catherine 1861 " 1-104 John 1790 NC 5-36 Hambleton 1823 " Rozanah 1791 Ga " Eliza 1845 Al. No households in this area were shown on the 1870 Grant census. Listings for other Tyson families were found in other Grant locations. Records found since first version note that wife of William Allbright was Elnora L. Gray (c. 1843 - 6/16/1886). She was daughter of James Gray (1801 - 3/02/1864). William Allbright died before 1876. The L.L. Tyson shown with Allbright household was listed as Louisiana Laurette Tyson, born 1856, later named as Laura L. Tyson and the mother of BE Melton. According to him, she lived with the Allbrights after her mother died until she married Elbert Madison Melton in 1876 and moved to the Melton area in Sec 28 T10N Winn Parish. Susan Emeline Tyson (1847 - 1935) had married JN Lawrence and moved away from this area. Other known Tyson children were not accounted for. 1860 Winn Census obtained for this revision notes L.L. (Laura) Tyson age 4 in the John Allbright household with all of the 1870 Census members except L.V. They were listed in Ward 5. This denotes pre-1870 residence of Laura with the Allbrights after death of her mother. No other Tysons were shown on 1860 Winn census. 1870 Grant Census (barely legible) shows only one Tyson (Elizabeth) age 77 b. Ga, living with a William Nugent family in Ward 4, HH-55-55. Other Tysons in Grant may not have been counted. 1870 census notes out of state births for some entries. Dates on the Allbrights notes very early emigration into this area. A land entry dated 1838 was found for John Allbright. The Eliza (nee ?) Tyson, born 1845 in Al should be the wife of Hambleton. Land records of 1871 found in Grant Records note Hambleton also spelled as I. Hamilton. Same person. 1870 census notes four colored residents of household #15, ward#5. They had moved to this area with James E. Tyson. There is no census entry for him, although land records dated 1858 & 1860 are known. He was also on the 1865 tax census. There is no census count of Caledonia Tyson (b.10/18/1860) or Edw. Barney Tyson (b.5/07/1869), children of wife # 2. BE Melton had noted that children were split up among relatives after the death of earlier wives. Both of these children were raised away from the original Tyson location here. Other notes reference James E. Tyson family: James E. Tyson had died prior to 1889. Book G - P37 notes a sale deed on 9/05/1889, Hugh P. Long "( as an heir in the estate of James E Tison)" sold to EM Melton the SE/4 and SW/4 of NW/4 of Sec 5 and NW/4 of SE/4 of Sec 6 T9N R2W (240 acres) for $23.30 in back taxes. Hugh P. Long was the husband of Caledonia Tyson, daughter of James E. Tyson. No other heir distributions from Sec 6 were found. Book P Page 342 notes a US deed to James E Tison (he bought this) dated 7/01/1859 and recorded 12/21/1907 for the NW - SW of Sec 4 T9N R2W. This is West of the Bear Creek bridge on US 167. It is likely that the early Tysons farmed the Secs 6,5 & 4 bottomland area along Bear Creek. Book P Page 374 notes that Laura Tyson Melton sold the E/2 of SE/4 of Sec 5 T9N R2W to BE Melton on 3/02/1908. His heirs still own this land. Book S Page 141 notes that she sold the S/2 of SW/4 and NW - SW of Sec 3 and NE - NE of Sec 9 and N/2 of NW/4 of Sec 10: all in T9N R2W to BE Melton on 5/09/1910. It was later sold to NT White. All of this area is in Bear Creek bottoms and likely part of James E Tyson holdings obtained by his grand-daughter Laura L. She also sold the SW-NW of Sec 5 to A H Stephens, husband of her daughter Mollie Melton (noted on S -140). Other Tyson land holdings included property in Sec 8, which joined Sec 5. Amanda Hyde had 160 acres (probably obtained from Tysons) that she sold to J.T. (John) Hyde on 8/25/1903. He then sold this to Grant Timber & Mfg Co. on 9/05/1903. Described as E/2 of NE/4 and E/2 of SE/4 of Sec 8 T9N R2W. Sale price $875. Another land sale in this area was: Book K Page 423 - sale dated 12/29/1870 and recorded 5/09/1871: I. Hamilton (Hambleton) Tyson sold to T S Collier the SE - NE; N/2 - SE; NE - SW of Sec 29 T9N R1W. (160 ac). Sale was amended and description changed to : the S/2 - SE; S/2 - SW of Sec 29 and NE - NW of Sec 32 , all in T9N R1W (200 ac) for $100. This is the only land sale found involving the uncle of Laura Tyson Melton. This land was some 6 miles East and 4 miles South of the Tyson Cemetery and located on Indian Creek NE of Williana. Book P Page 439 notes the sale of the NW/4 of Sec 6 T9N R2W adjacent to the Tyson Cemetery area. This 160 acres was sold by B L Durrett to George W. Moore, wife of Sallie Olliver Moore and father of Johnnie Edgar Moore on 7/27/1908 for $1150. Property still owned by heirs. According to JE Moore, this was orginally homestead property. James Edward also owned property in Secs 28 & 29-10-2 in Winn Parish just North of Packton. Madison M. Melton bought 200 ac. at Tax Collector sale in April 1881 that was sold for taxes owed. These records were lost when the Winn parish courthouse at Winnfield burned 11/23/1886. Madison sued for possession and got judgement for property on 9/03/1890. Property was: N/2-NE/4, SE-NE, NE-SE Sec 28 & SW-NW Sec 29 T10N R2W. The above are the only land references found for the Tyson Cemetery Winn/Grant border area of Tyson/Allbright settlement. South Grant Parish Tysons: William J. Tyson (1846 - 1921) moved to the Rock Hill/Rigolette Bayou area and had extensive land holdings near the Grant/Rapides line. It is likely that Caledonia and Edw. Barney ( children of James E) were raised with him, as later land transactions between Barney & William J were noted. This matches with prior BE Melton comments. Land records of 2/15/1871 note that children of William/Sarah E sold their succession rights to heir property to William J Tison. Land records of 10/11/1883 & prior note that children/other heirs of William/Sarah E sold heir land in Sec 19 T7N R1W and Sec 24 T7N R2W to William J Tison. This was the Dry Prong area property. Land records of 4/26/1923 and earlier note the children of the second marriage of William J/Laura E Tyson selling their heir property to James E Tison, son of his first marriage. This included land in Secs 4 & 5 T5N R2W (Rock Hill area), Sec 29 T6N & Secs 6 & 7 T6N R1E (Pollock area). Jame E Tison also owned (1/05/1895) land in Sec 34 T6N (Rock Hill) and most of the old Walnut Grove Plantation on Rigolette Bayou south of Rock Hill. He was a major landowner in this area. All Tysons from this second family are buried elsewhere.
