Davies 120 Ted Price Lane Winnfield, LA 71483 Monette's Ferry, La., Dec. 6, '08 Editor Colfax Chronicle: The recent death of James Carter, at Selma, La., is announced. He was a member of the famous Winn Rifles, Company C, Captain David Pierson's company, 3d Louisiana Infantry, McCulloch's Brigade. He was a No. 1 soldier, and was in the battles of Oak Hills, Iuka, Elk Horn, Corinth and Vicksburg. Very few of this company are now left. I can only call to mind J. Matt McCain, of Montgomery, Isaac N. Hicks, Natchitoches, James Rudd and Joe Smith, Winnfield, Wm.______n, Coldwater, La., and Marks Winner, of Meridian, Miss. These old fellows need a fitting remembrance. This Monette's Ferry, on the Cane river, is where the old stage road crossed, going from east to west to Texas and northward. Its old road, well worn by thousands of tired feet, is abandoned now, and forrest trees are growing in its bed. This old ferry has scars of battle, and was made famous by acts of men who made history. It was here that Gen. Dick Taylor headed Banks off and gave battle. In the field opposite 470 Federal troops were killed. Bee's Division of Texas troops gave way, or Banks' army would have been captured. On the long hill back of the ferry, the 8th La. Dismounted Cavalry fought a brigade, Smith's brigade, of Federal troops. The timber to this days shows the marks of this contest. Among our people now living who took part in this battle are Capt. Dick Turner, now in Texas, Wm. Hardie, of Montrose, Clem Lonadier, Avoyelles, George Davison, Mt. Zion, and Thomas McWilliams.
