Obit: Charley Bardwell, Grant Parish Submitted to USGENWEB by: Houston Tracy Jr The Colfax Chronicle January 27, 1939 Former librarian, Helen Sorrell, at the Grant Parish Library had gone through some of the microfilm of the newspaper files of the Chronicle and made copies of obituaries and/or news items, which led to death. These were found in a folder on the book shelf at that library on a research trip there 13 February 1999. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Charley Bardwell Ends Own Life Early Friday Early Friday morning, January 27, 1939, Charley Bradford (sic), 44, farmer of the Clear Creek community in Grant Parish shot and killed himself while at his home. It is stated that Bardwell (sic) fired a 410 gauge shotgun into his chest, near his heart, while in bed at his home at about 6 a.m. A note was left explaining that ill health and despondency were the causes of his action. Death was almost instantaneous after the shot was fired. Dr. I.W. Sanford, parish coroner, held an inquest and reported the cause of death as "suicide from a gunshot wound", according to report made here. The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ollie Bardwell (sic), one son, Leroy Bardwell, and three daughters (not named). He also leaves 5 brothers and four sisters (not named) Funeral services were conducted from the family residence at 10:30 Saturday morning, followed by interment in Clear Creek cemetery.
