J. Byrnes, 65, Dies December 21 After Long Illness Edward James Byrnes, well known Winnfield businessman for many years, died in a local hospital at 1:15 p.m., Friday, Dec. 21 after several years of ill health. He was 65 years of age, being born on October 8, 1886. Funeral services were conducted at the family residence at 101 W. Boundary at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, with Dr. W. L. Holcomb, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Interment was in the Pollock, La., Cemetery under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home. Pallbearers included J. N. Sowers, A. L. Sikes, Sr., D. C. Warner, Harvey Rhymes, J. L. Beck, C. D. Moss, Howard Tarver, Richard Heard, K. T. Egan, and Everett Burke. Mr. Byrnes is survived by his wife, a son, Robert C. (Bobby) Byrnes, of Winnfield; a daughter, Mrs. Alma Byrnes Trahan, of Alexandria; a sister, Mrs. L. T. Whitten of Memphis, Tenn., and two grandchildren. A native of Memphis, Tenn., Mr. Byrnes moved to Winnfield in 1918 from Jena, La., where he was a hotel and sawmill owner. He purchased the local Ford agency, then known as Winn Motor Company, in 1926, after being associated with the organization for some time, and served as its manager for almost a quarter of a century, later serving as its vice-president after its incorporation, with his son as president and his daughter as secretary-treasurer. He was a member of the Baptist Church and of the local Masonic fraternity, having joined the latter in the early '20s.
