CORBETT, FORMER GRANT RESIDENT DIES IN SHREVEPORT Deceased Was Office Deputy Sheriff in Rapides For Past 15 Years James Horace Corbett, aged 48 years, widely known and popular citizen of Rapides parish, died in a Shreveport hospital about 12 o'clock noon, on Saturday, July 22, 1939. The deceased had been a deputy in the office of Sheriff W.T. Downs, of Rapides parish for the past fifteen year. Prior to this he held a position as chief office deputy in the office of former Sheriff L. O. Clinton of Grant, parish, which he filled faithfully and efficiently for a number of years, until Sheriff Clinton Relinquished his office. He had a wide circle of friends throughout Grant and Rapides parishes who mourn his passing. Although he had been in failing health for more than a year and it was known that his condition was serious, his death came as a distinct shock t his family and friends. Shortly after the election of Sheriff Downs, he accepted the position similar to the one held in Grant parish. he discharged his duties with efficiency and with fidelity to duty, and had the reputation of being one of the expert and accurate office accountants in the state. He was never known to have made and error, his books and accounts having always been found correct. Mr. Corbitt was born near Colfax in Grant parish, August 19, 1891. he was a son of Mr. and Mrs. R.r. Corbett, members of a prominent family of this section. He was reared at his native home, attending the public schools and completed his education at Tyler Commercial College, Tyler, Texas. He was a devout member of the Baptist Church, holding membership in the Calvery Church of Alexandria and was also a member of the Masonic fraternity, being officiated with Solomon Lodge, No. 221, of Pineville. He was married on December 26, 1926, to Miss Ruth Hodges, of Cotton Valley, La. He is survived by his widow and a young son, James Horace Corbett, Jr. He also leaves his mother, who is 93 years old, and three sisters, Miss Nancy Corbett, Mrs. Ernest Newton and Mrs. Laura Tingle, all of Grant parish. A number of nieces and nephews survive him. The funeral was held at the Calvary Baptist church at 4:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Da. Charles R. Shirar, the pastor, afficiated. Interment was made in Greenwood Memorial Park, Pineville.
