Hams, third grade teacher at Pinecrest High School. After a short illness, she passed away Thursday, October 4, 1956, at a local hospital at about 3:00 p.m. She was 61 years old. Oldest in point of service among Negro teachers in the Parish, Mariah had served 30 years in the local system with the distinction of all those years being completed at Pinecrest. As third grade teacher in the school for over two decades she had taught many hundreds of the students who passed through the school since 1926. Ms. Hams was born in Grant Parish, La., May 11, 1895. Final rites were held at Morning Star Baptist Church, Sunday, Oct. 7, at 2:30 p.m. Hundreds of persons witnessed the ceremony with consisted of Obituary, Hazel W. Brown; Remarks, Jesse Nelson, Dewey Stringer, and Principal J. Andrews Galdsden, and funeral oration by Rev. H. Y. Bell. Interment was in the local cemetery.
