Carstens was born at Shreveport, La., Oct. 16, 1875. He is the eldest son of E. J. Carstens, a prominent merchant of New Iberia, La., where his family now reside. He is a graduate of the New Iberia High School, class of '92. After his scholastic training he entered his father's employ, but abandoned commercial life three years later to study stenography. In 1895 he graduated from the Fasnacht Graded Institute of New Iberia, and a few months later entered the law firm of Weeks & Weeks of that place. He had always desired to study medicine, and in 1896 his hopes were realized by being enrolled as a student in the medical department of Tulane University. During the past four years he has attended Tulane regularly, and was elected treasurer of the student body for the session of 1898-99.
