(New Iberia, La.) 1885-1902, June 03, 1899, Image 3 June 3, 1899 A very distressing accident occurred on Saturday evening last, resulting in the death of Miss Lelia Pike, of Assumption, who was visiting her sister, Mrs. Sharp, Hope plantation. Misses Farmer, daughters of Mr. W. R. Farmer, was returning from a ride to New Iberia; the horse driven by the ladies took fright and ran away While the Misses Farmer were struggling to check the frantic animal, Miss Pike jumped out of the vehicle. In the mean time Mr. Honora Romero and a friend, on horse-back, seized the frenzied animal by the bridle and running along with him finally checked him. The ladies who remained in the vehicle escaped injury, but when succor was brought to Miss Pike she was found dead, her neck having been broken in the jump from the vehicle. Her remains were taken to her home in Assumption for burial.
