Died: In New Iberia, Sept 30th, 1898, Mrs. Emma Archer. The death of Mrs. Emma Archer, so untimely, so sudden and unexpected, made a deep impression on the community. To be taken away while in the very prime of life, with a work and mission which she only could perform, is certainly lamentable. There are melancholy circumstances connected with this untimely death which are most appealing and pathetic. What can be sadder than the absence from home of one to whom she was indeed a ministering angel, and another, her first-born, her own Noelie. At that most solemn hour when her pure soul took its flight to a better world, these two were not present. It was sad and regrettable to have been deprived of the last testimonies of expiring love, and the many other tender assurances and words of solace which endear the parting scene, and which leave to memory something to soothe the pangs of separation. To eulogize the dead, who in thought, word, or deed, have made the world better and happier by their presence, and sadder by their absence, is a natural and beautiful prompting of the human heart. It is no exaggeration to say that Emma Archer was a very pattern of a wife and mother. What more can we say of a woman. These are her highest prerogatives. While her many noble qualities of mind and heart endeared her to every one, at this particular moment it is our wish to to (sic) recall that sweet simplicity, cheerful disposition, the alert and practical intellect, that sympathetic and affectionate nature, all of which attributes were so happily blended, and all of which made her an ideal wife. She assumed the responsibilities of the married state while in the very spring-time of her life. While she was the ornament and joy of her husband in his happier and more prosperous moments, she was also his devoted companion and sweet comforter in the hour of sickness and adversity. As the ivy clings to the oak for support, and yet when the sturdy monarch of the forest is rifted by the thunder bolt it will wind itself around the shattered boughs, so did Emma Archer rise in mental force and chareter (sic) to be the mainstay and solace of her husband under sickness and misfortune. Only those who knew her well saw how beautiful and heroic was her devotion to her invalid husband. Her spirit of self-sacrifice, her indomitable courage, her perfect resignation to the inevitable, which seemed so imminent sometimes, challenged the highest admiration. A good wife must prove a good mother, Mother! Ah what hidden beauties and virtues are centered in that title when applied to the deceased. The children who survive her, and who were the recipients of her tender love, unwearied solicitude, and boundless devotion, must realize how irreparable the loss of the sweet mother. The queen of her little household she reigned over it in a loving spirit, but always with a firm and just hand. Her happy and buoyant temperament would permit her to forget her own sorrows while she joined in the joys and merriment of her children. On such occasions she appeared more like a sister than a mother. To cheat oneself into a momentary forgetfulness of one's own sorrows, for the sake of diffusing happiness and hope into the hearts of those around is truly noble living. The tomb has closed its portals on her earthly remains, but "there is a voice from the tomb sweeter than a song." The deceased has left her impress on the world; it will endure forever. The tender recollections of her noble traits of mind and heart and of those virtues which made her life one perpetual blessing, will soothe the grief- stricken hearts of the loved ones who mourn her loss.
