Left Home Hale and Hearty in the Early Morning. A Little Later the Mangled Remains Were Returned. The People of this place were shocked on last Thursday morning at learning of the terrible death which overtook the venerable Mr. Felecian (sic) Aucoin. At an early hour in the morning his mangled remains were discovered upon the Southern Pacific Railroad track, near the corner of Washington and Corinne streets.. He had been run over by a train. There is very little that could be learned of the affair; there seems to have been no witnesses to the tragedy. Mr. Aucoin left his home early in the morning at a few minutes before 5 o'clock and evideutly (sic) proceeded at once towards the Blanchet & Roy lumber yards. He must have attempted to cross the tracks ahead of a train, possibly in the uncertain light stumbled and fell, and before he could regain his feet the train was upon him. The wheels passed over his upper chest, severing his head from his body. His remains were discovered shortly after the accident and were taken to his home. It was a terrible shock to the family, they having had no warning. Mr. Aucoin came to this section many years ago from the Lafourche country, and made his home here. He was a contractor and builder and was widely known. He was an active and energetic man and showed but little waning of his powers, notwithstanding the weight of many years upon his shoulders. The sympathies of this community go forth to the family in their bereavement. source: New Iberia Enterprise. (New Iberia, La.) 1885-1902, November 10, 1900, Image 3 On Thursday morning last, between the hours of 4:30 aud (sic) 5 o'clock, the venerable carpenter, Mr. Felicien Aucoin, aged 74 years, left his residence with his saw and hatchet in hand, to go to his work. About an hour later his mangled and mutilated remains were found on the railway tracks near the depot, having been run over by one of the several trains operating over the tracks that morning. The numerous accidents occurring of late over the Southern Pacific Railroad in this vicinity would seem to indicate a degree of carelessness fhat (sic) is inexcusable. From the fact that the trainmen guilty of the killing of Mr. Aucoin conceal their identity, inasmuch as it has not developed by which train he was killed, there seems to be criminal negligence on the part of some of these railway employees. In an unavoidable accident of this kind, there can be no motive for concealment.
