Editor Capitolian - We are sure all old Baton Rougeans will join with us in rendering a tribute of respect to the memory of the above named gentleman, who died at his residence on Petit Anse Island, Sunday, June 8th, in his 70th year. Judge Avery was a native of Baton Rouge, where he resided until 1862, at which time he removed to his plantation. He occupied many positions of trust and honor during his long residence here. He was one of our prominent lawyers - represented us in Legislature - was judge of our district court, and was the working commissioner in the building of the State House. Was possessed of a goodly share of this world's goods, which he used with a liberal hand in dispensing his noble hospitalities, to citizens as well as strangers. He was a high-toned gentleman of the old school - was always with the foremost in public improvements - and was honored and respected by all. His mental faculties were vigorous to the last - his death peaceful and happy, confident in the mercy of his Savior, and surrounded by his whole family. W. G. Waller. Baton Rouge, La., June 13, 1879.
