This community was shocked last Thursday morning upon learning of the death of Mr. Laurent Bazus, our fellow citizen, after an illness of only a few days. Mr. Bazus was known far and wide as the proprietor of the Bazus Hotel, having been engaged in that business for at least a quarter of a century and by his steady frugality amassed considerable property in New Iberia. Deceased was a native of Vie en Bigorre, Hautes Pireenees (sic), France, coming to America in the year 1832 and taking up his residence in the town of Abbeville, thence drifting to this City about eight years thereafter, passing to other shores at the ripe old age of 79 years. Mr. Bazus leaves to mourn his loss a widow and two children, Mrs. A. J. Maumus and Lewis Bazus, who had always been identified with him in business. He was for many years Foreman of Iberia Fire Company No. 1 and took great pride in the volunteer Fire Department of New Iberia of which he had been almost a life long member. The funeral of this good citizen and landmark was held at St. Peter's Catholic church at 5:30 o'clock and the large assemblage of citizens in attendance at the last services to the deceased was a just tribute to his sterling citizenship. His family have the symathy (sic) of the entire community. source: New Iberia Enterprise and Independent Observer. (New Iberia, La.) 1902-1944, April 15, 1911, Image 3 CARD OF THANKS.
