On Tuesday night the book of the mortal life of Mrs. Jean Baptiste Berard, nee Aurelia Uval, was closed after receiving the records of 92 years of active and useful existence. She was born on Sept. 22nd, 1821. She lived to see her children descend to the fifth generation before being called to her crown and reat. When Mrs. Berard was but six years old she and a little sister were left, double orphans, to the administering care of their aunt, Mrs. Valerien Martin, the grandmother of Hon. Rob. A. Martin of St. Martinville. The parents of the two little girls were of German descent. In the course of time Aurelia became the honored wife of Mr. J. B. Berard of upper St. Martin parish. Aurelia married very young. And after a very brief, but happy wedded union, she was left a widow, with two children to fight the battle of life alone for over three quarters of a century. Until about five years ago she was vigorous and active, requiring no assistance from any one in administering to her physical wants. At about that time, while visiting at the home of her grandson, Mr. Geo. Duperier, she met with a severe fall, dislocating a hip. This misfortune rendered her an invalid the rest of her days. Time seemed to have but little influence upon her mind, retaining full possession of all her mental faculties to the last. She remembered and recalled the details of many happenings that occurred before many of the present day old folks were born. Not only this, but she maintained an interest in the babies of her great-grandchildren, called them by name and inquired about them by name and inquired about them whenever occasion presented. Men today of eighty odd years, who have known her all of their lives, are too young to remember her marriage, which event took place at the plantation home of her childhood, near Breaux Bridge. That occasion was a brilliant one, the feasting and entertaining of the guests lasting a week. Mrs. Louis Indest, Sr., has pieces of the old family plate coming down to her from her grandmother, engraved with the family name of "Uval." These highly treasured relics and heirlooms are most probably considerably beyond a century old. Among her honored descendents are the well known names of Mrs. Frederick Duperier and Ernest (Boyd) Berard, her only two children. Appearing in the second generation are Mrs. Octave Renoudet, Mrs. Clet Girard, Ernest and Walter Berard, the children of Boyd Berard. The latter two are men of families to day. Also appearing in the second generation are the sons and daughters of Mrs. (Dr.) Frederick Duperier: Mrs. Louis Indest, Sr., Mrs. Willie Lassalle, Mrs. Lawrence F. Villermin, Mrs. Paul Dauterive and Mrs. Emile F. Ribbeck, Geo. Duperier, Gab'l Duperier, Raoul Duperier, and Henry F. Duperier - the latter two deceased. it is stated of grandma Berard that she was proud of the fact of living to see both her son and daughter happily married. The fact that she lived to see all her grand children married was of as much satisfaction to this grand old lady. The wedded homes of the third generation holds Mr. Otto Indest, Mrs. Wm. Lourd, Mrs. Joel Fisher, Mr. Fred Indest, Mr. Louis Indest, Jr., and the families of the lineal descendants of Ernest Berard, Sr. The fourth generation are the children in the happy homes of the families next above mentioned. She is survived by 2 children, 11 grand children, 48 great grandchildren, 38 great great grandchildren. Her sacred dust was laid to rest from St. Peters Catholic Church on Tuesday after noon, the last sad services to her memory being largely attended.
