New Iberia lost a valuable citizen in the passing away of Mr. William L. Burke, a son of the late James L. Burke, born Sept. 12th, 1870. His death occurred at his home on Julia Street in this city on Monday, November 17th, 1919 at 10:30 o'clock P. M. Mr. Burke, due to his illness for several years was confined to his home, and was unable to live that active life which was characteristic of him in previous years. He always labored for the up- building of the community and Parish, taking a prominent part in every movement which had this end in view. A man of superior intellect, possessing a sense of justice, he was always ready to lend a helping hand and to see that justice was done whenever he thought he should lend a hand. For several years, during his early manhood, he served as assistant postmaster during the administration of the late Mrs. V. P. Guilfoux, and later under Mr. Robert Brantly. A few years thereafter he accepted the responsible position as deputy Collector of Customs at New Orleans, under Hon. Theodore Wilkinson, filling the position with honor and fidelity. Mr. Burke when his term expired removed to the State of Texas where he resided for a number of years. Coming back to Louisiana later, he located at Crowley and engaged in the insurance business. Answering the natural inclinations of an ardent Iberian, he then returned to his home town. On his return he was appointed secretary of the Police Jury of the Parish and filled this position very creditably and to the satisfaction of the people. Deceased leaves to mourn him, a widow, nee Gabrielle Sambolla, and two brothers, Messrs. Walter J. Burke and Porteus R. Burke and several sisters, Mrs. S. B. Mistrot of Waco, Texas; Mrs. Brownson Kerr and Mrs. Thomas of New York; Mrs. Henry Fuller and Mrs. J. P. Suberbielle of this City. The funeral was conducted from St. Peter's Catholic church, Rev. J. M. Langlois officiating, on Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock. The pall bearers were Judge J. S. Power, Dr. W. F. Carstens, Albert A. DeBlanc, Fritz Dietlein, Ed. L. Estorge and F. W. Bauman. A large number of members of the Knights of Columbus and the Elks of this City attended the obsequies in a body. The grief-stricken widow and other members of the family have the deep sympathy of the community.
