BUSSEY. - One of Iberia's best known and most highly esteemed citizens, one who was loved and admired not only locally, but all over Louisiana, was this man who passed away last Saturday at 7:20 P. M. For several weeks his life had been dispaired of, but even under this circumstance, his death was a distinct shock to the entire parish. Mr. Bussey was a native of Indiana, coming to this state in early boyhood with his father. The senior Mr. Bussey and the late J. N. Pharr purchased Loisel plantation and refinery about the year 1875, and it was run under the name of Pharr & Bussey. Then Dr. Bussey died, and his widow carried on the partnership, with John C. Bussey managing her interests. Some years later came the death of Mr. J. N. Pharr, in 1903, breaking the partnership. In 1909 Loisel Sugar Co., was organized, with John C. Bussey, President, Eugene Pharr, Vice-President; John A. Pharr, Secty. Mr. Bussey was a clear thinking, keen visioned business man, with a talent for success in all financial matters. With this, he had a heart too big to refuse a favor, and hundreds of persons have had cause to thank him for generous assistance in times of need. He probably enjoyed the widest circle of genuine friends of any man in Southwest Louisiana - because he himself was a good friend, and a good man. Mr. Bussey had been for years an enthusiastic member of the Masonic fraternity and the Presbyterian Church. The funeral services were conducted from the Jeanerette Presbyterian Church, being in charge of the Masons, at 4 P. M., last Sunday. An escort of Knights Templars in full regalia, and a hundred or more Chapter and Blue Lodge Masons accompanied the deceased to the grave, where the beautifully impressive Masonic services were held. Besides these men, there was a general outpouring of the citizens of Iberia and adjourning parishes to pay respect to the spotless character and all round good American citizenship of this man. To have lived in the good will of all mankind, and to have the genuine regret of the entire community accompanying your demise, must be a comforting thought to the head that presses the pillow of death. To John C. Bussey, most certainly are due the rewards of a beautiful Christian life.
