Funeral services were conducted at the Baton Rouge Episcopal Church, Rev. Philip P. Werlein officiating. Interment was made in the New Iberia cemetery. Mr. Berwick was a member of a prominent St. Mary parish family, being the son of the late Oscar D. Berwick and Mrs. Adelaide Dungan Berwick of that parish. The town of Berwick was named for the family. He moved to Eunice from St. Mary parish 27 years ago and engaged in banking business for quarter of a century. He was identified with the city government for many years, serving as a member of the board of aldermen a number of terms, as city treasurer and city clerk. He was also president of one of Eunice's leading insurance agencies for many years, with which he was identified until ill health compelled him to retire. He was also active in all civic, fraternal and educational affairs of Eunice, and assisted materially in all the public improvement programs of the city until ill health forced him to retire and move to Baton Rouge where he has since resided with his son, Joseph Warren Berwick, Jr., insurance man of that city. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Kitty Henry Berwick, one son, Joseph Warren Berwick, Jr., two sisters, Mrs. Virginia Bowman and Mrs. Lula West of Centreville; and four brothers, Dudley, of Eunice, Dr. David A., of Merryville, Walter S., of Memphis, and Dr. Edward C. WARREN BERWICK BURIED THURS. - Prominent Citizen And Business Leader Of Eunice 27 Years Succumbs To Long Illness. - Funeral services for Joseph Warren Berwick, 66, prominent Eunice citizen, local banker, and member of the city administration under different mayors, for many years, who died at his residence in Baton Rouge, Wednesday at 5 a. m., were conducted Thursday morning at 11 o'clock, at the Baton Rouge Episcopal church, the Rev. Werlein, rector officiating. Burial was in the New Iberia cemetery at 3 p. m., Thursday. Mr. Berwick had been ill for a number of years, and had made his home in Baton Rouge for the past two years. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Kitty Henry Berwick; son Joseph Warren Berwick, Jr., two sisters, Mrs. F. N. West and Mrs. Doctor Ira Brown of Centerville, and four brothers, Dudley Berwick of Eunice, Dr. David A. Berwick, Merryville; Dr. Edward C. Berwick, Austin, Texas, and Walter S. Berwick, Memphis, Tenn. Mr. Berwick was member of a prominent St. Mary parish family, being the son of the late Oscar D. Berwick and Adelaide Dungan Berwick of that parish. All the family were reared on a large sugar plantation in St. Mary parish, until they were grown and married, which was cleared of timber and put in cultivation by their father, Oscar D. Derwick after he returned from the Civil war. The deceased came to Eunice from St. Mary parish 27 years ago, and engaged in local banking business, for quarter of a century. He was identified with the local city government for many years, serving as member of the board of aldermen a number of terms, as city treasurer and city clerk. He was president of one of Eunice's leading insurance agencies for many years, with which he was identified until ill health compelled him to retire. He was also active in all civic, fraternal and educational affairs of Eunice, and assisted materially in all the public improvement programs of the city until ill health forced him to retire, and move to Baton Rouge, where he has since resided with his son Joseph Warren Berwick, Jr., prominent insurance man of that city. During his 27 years residence in Eunice, he was considered and consulted as chief among the city's business leaders through its 25 years growth. He was also a Mason for many years, and was a member of Harmony Lodge No. 410 of Eunice, at the time of his death. While his body lay in state, Wednesday, at a Baton Rouge funeral home, many well-known citizens of Baton Rouge called, as well as Eunice friends, who attended the church funeral in Baton Rouge and accompaniel the cortege to New Iberia, where the final rites were held. Many and elaborate were the beautiful floral offerings attesting to the high esteem in which he was held in Eunice, Baton Rouge, other cities and communities of this and other states.
