(New Iberia, La.) 1885-1902, May 22, 1897, Image 3 On Saturday night last, Mr. Joseph Choureau, an old resident of this parish, residing near Loreauville, committed suicide by first stabbing himself over the heart and then throwing himself in a cistern adjoining his residence, where his body was recovered the next morning. Mr. Choureau was a Frenchman by birth, had lived and conducted a mercantile business for many years at the place of his death and was much esteemed by all who knew him. A few years ago, two sons who had brown to manhood, died, and from that time he grew despondent. For some time past, sores had broken out upon his hands, rendering him helpless, and it is believed led to his desperate act. Some time prior he made a will *smudge* all of his property to his friends and neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Lee J [smudge].
