Creamer marykcreamer@yahoo.com August 19, 2016, 10:40 pm The Planters' Banner. (Franklin, Attakapas Co., Lou.) 1849-1872, May 17, 1871, Image 2 Death of Ulger Decuir. Died on the 11th inst., at his residence in this place, Ulger Decuir, a native of this parish, aged 55 years. The funeral of the deceased was largely attended. The funeral ceremonies were performed at the Catholic church in this place, by Father Chasse, assisted by Father Beaubien. The church, the alter, the cross, the image of the Savior and of the Virgin, the coffin and a hundred burning candles were all draped in mourning, and the occasion was one of great solemnity. The chanting of mass, the burning incense, the sprinkling of Holy Water on the body of the deceased, women's voice in chants mingled with the deep toned notes of the organ and the sorrowful countenances of a host of friends and neighbors, all united in rendering the occasion impressive, and sad. The deceased was a good man in the Creole acceptation of the term. He was kind and genial, and was universally beloved. In his youth, in his manhood and riper years he always enjoyed the friendship and confidence of those who knew him best. He was the best representative of that class of kind hearted, Creole gentlemen which has always won the highest admiration of strangers, and the honest admiration of strangers, and the honest friendship of the citizens of the country. His loss will be deeply mourned by the people of this town, of the parish, and of a large circle of friends in the adjoining parishes. May his children inherit his virtues, and his neighbors zealously imitate them. May Heaven comfort his worthy family in their deep afflictions.
