Decuir, colored, a carpenter by trade, died at his home, No. 124 Taylor street, this city. His funeral took place that evening from St. Peters Catholic Church at 5:30 o'clock. He was born on Jan'y 12, 1843. In 1873, on March 12th, he was commissioned "Deputy Post Master" for New Iberia. His commision recited the fact that "L O Hacker was a Deputy" and was signede by President U. S. Grant. On April 30th, 1877. he was commissioned Post by Post Master General David M. Key, and on January 29th, 1878, a new commission issued to him signed by President H. B. Hayes. About this time Mr. Joe Indest became the Deputy Post Master for this place and continued to serve as such for seven years. In 1882, on February 24, he was re-commissioned Post Master of this city by President C. A. Arthur, with Eugene Decuir serving as his Deputy. Some 4 or 5 months before the expirarion of this, his last commission, he tendered his resiguation on account of ill health. For 12 years, nearly, he served this office, by virtue of commissions signed by three Presidents. His predecessor as Post Master was Sam'l Wakefield, also a colored man. His successor was Mrs. G. B. Guilfoux, who was appointed to the office under President Grover Cleveland.
