DIED: On last Sunday morning, at his home in the 7th Ward of this parish, Voorhies Derouen, in the 73d year of his age. The deceased was an elder brother of Assessor T. Armance Derouen. The funeral took place on Monday forenoon, at 9:30 o'clock, at Deroen station, Rev. Father Gruel of this city officiating. Mr. Derouen was a Confederate Veteran, having served in Company D, 7th La. Cavalry. He was one of those who promptly came forward and offered to take part in the organization of Iberia Camp No. 1788 and became one of its charter members. His is the first loss to the Camp's roll of members. Capt. Commander E. J. Carstens had prepared a beautiful floral wreath with a white ribbon across its center, bearing the initials, "U. C. V." In its preparation expression was given to the artistic taste of Mrs. Walter J. Carstens as far as suitable materials could be readily commanded. The wreath was borne, on Monday morning, to the house of mourning and presented in the home of Iberia Camp No. 1788. Captain J. Carstens, Adjutant Flory, and Comrade R. D. Stansbury represented the Camp at the obsequies. Our information indicates that Mr. Derouen was a victim of heart troubles. He had, on that morning, attended to the milking of the cows and, this actustomed (sic) duty done, had taken his seat on the gallery of his home, and was in the act of lighting a cigarette when he was touched by the cold finger of the messenger of death. source: New Iberia Enterprise and Independent Observer. On Sunday morning last, Grim Reaper claimed all that was mortal of Mr. Voorhies Derouen, a life-long resident and successful planter of the Petite Anse section of this Parish. Mr. Derouen was stricken with heart failure and breathed his last at seven o'clock A. M., aged 73 years. He leaves to mourn his demise his wife, a large number of children and two brothers, Messrs. T. A. Derouen, the Parish Assessor and Armel Derouen. Mr. Derouen being a member of Iberia Camp No. 1788, U. C. V. of New Iberia, Adjutant Flory, Captain Carstens and Private Robert Stansbury escorted the remains to its last resting place. As a token of respect a beautiful wreath was sent the deceased, lettered U. C. V. which was placed on the grave of the deceased. The last sad rites were performed by Father Gruel of St. Peter's Catholic Church of this City in the presence of hundreds of relatives and sympathetic friends.
