(New Iberia, La.) 1894-1946, April 25, 1914, Image 3 ALEXANDER DEVALCOURT Died at Birmingham, Ala. - Remains brought Home for Interment. On Tuesday, the 21st instant, at midnight, at Birmingham, Ala., Alexander DeValcourt's book of life was closed by the angel of death. His son, Mr. Bruns DeValcourt, and his sister, Mrs. Sarah Barnard, were with him. His remains were brought back to his old home here, received by the members of Auhora Lodge No. 193, F. & A. M., and laid to rest in the family plot of Rose Hill Cemetery with Masonic honors. The funeral services were held at the Church of the Epiphany, Rev. R. R. Diggs, officiating. The church was very prettily decorated with flowers and ferns by the lady members of the congregation. Mr. DeValcourt was the last surviving charter member of Aurora Lodge No. 193, F. & A. M, In May, 1868, he, Maj. Jno. Fletcher Wyche and Dr. Jas. A. Lee went to Franklin and received the three degrees in Freemasonry. On Aug. 3rd of the same year these three and seven others organized Aurora Lodge under a special dispensation granted by the Grand Lodge of this state. He was at one time employed in the office of the Clerk of Court of this Parish. In the latter part of the eighties he removed to Birmingham, Alabama, where he made his home the remaining years of his life. He is survived by his brother, Jno. T. DeValcourt and two sisters, Miss Lizzie DeValcourt and Mrs. Sarah Barnard; also two sons, Bruns and Alexander, Jr. The pall bearers were; Jno. R. Taylor, Chas. Gougnenheim, P. R. Burke, C. E. Smedes, W. G. Weeks and J. J. Forgey. His last illness started in the form of a severe attack of la grippe, drifting into complications involving several of his vital organs. *************************************************************** 2nd. New Iberia lost another of its natives last Tuesday, April 21st, at Birmingham, Ala. in the person of Mr. Alexander DeValcourt, born March 28th, 1842, the remains arriving here on Thursday afternoon at four o'clock via the Southern Pacific, accompanied by Mr. Bruns DeValcourt, the esteemed son of the deceased and Mrs. Sarah Barnard who had been called to his bedside during his illness. Mr. DeValcourt's death was a distinct shock to a large number of our old residents here who knew him from childhood, being a son of one of the first settlers of this country with a large number of descendants, many of them being prominently identified in business circles. Some fifteen or sixteen years ago Mr. DeValcourt removed to Birmingham, Ala., where he accepted a position as auditor of the Crane Iron Manufacturing Company and held this position continuously until he was overcome with an attack of Bright's disease from which he succumbed. Mr. DeValcourt leaves to mourn his demise two sons, Messrs. Bruns and Alexson and two sisters and one brother, Mrs. Sarah Barnard, Miss Lizzie and Mr. John T. DeValcourt. The funeral services were held at the Epiphany church, Rev. Diggs officiating after which they were escorted to the Rose Hill Cemetery by a large number of the members of Aurora Lodge No. 139, F. & A. M. of which Order he was one of the charter members. The pall bearers were Messr. John R. Taylor, C. E. Smedes, J. J. Forgey, P. R. Burke, W. G. Weeks and Chas. Gouguenheim. The family have the sympathy of the community in the hour of their grief.
