(New Iberia, La.) 1902-1944, October 26, 1918, Image 4 In its ruthless path, the Spanish Influenza at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, October 24th, claimed as a victim, Mr. Dracos A. Dimitry, for the past fifteen years, agent of the M. L. & T. R. R. at this point. Few men were better known in New Iberia, and none more universally esteemed than was Mr. Dimitry. Aligning himself with the progressive element, it was not long after his advent that the community recognized in Mr. Dimitry an active and potent factor for good. No movement for the advancement of New Iberia was ever launched, that he did not participate in its development, and many are the civil and social reforms which his energetic efforts and wise council helped to inaugurate and bring to realization. Always affable, courteous and accommodating, he performed the exacting duties of his position with absolute faithfulness to his Company and strict honesty towards the patrons of the road, thereby earning for himself the full confidence of all with whom he dealt. Several times, Mr. Dimitry was offered promotion at other points, but having established his home here, identified himself with local interests and formed a valued circle of friends, he elected to continue in New Iberia rather than remove to less congenial surroundings for material gain. In early manhood, Mr. Dimitry was married to Miss Lizzie Ruth, who for more than a quarter of a century was his true help-mate in every sense of the word. With her, survive three children, issue of their marriage, viz: Lieutenant Dracos Dimitry, with the Aerial squadron in France; Mrs. Dr. Morvant of Jeanerette, whose husband is on the Army Medical Corps, stationed at Gerstner Field, and Mrs. Donald R. Burke of New Iberia. Although the funeral was private, over a score of people assembled at the Catholic church at 5:30 Thursday afternoon to pay the last tribute to their departed friend. source: The Weekly Iberian. (New Iberia, La.) 1894-1946, October 26, 1918, Image 2 The Southern Pacific Railroad Co, at this city, has been fortunate indeed to have been represented by a gentleman of so many characteristics as were possesed by Mr. D. A. Dimitry, the Agent, who succumbed on Thursday morning to an attack of influenza and pneumonia combined. The Saturday before, he was about his duties and greeted many of the patrons of the company and his personal friends. As the disease took a firmer hold upon his constitution he was forced to surrender and seek his bed. From the first his case seemed to develop alarming symptoms which indicated the end. He is survived by his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Morvant of Jeanerette and Mrs. Donald Burke of this city, and one son, Lieut. Dracos Dimitry, now serving in France.
