New Iberia, La., Aug 15 - The shadow of sorrow fell over this city and entire community this afternoon when the Grim Reaper felled one of New Iberia's most influential and popular citizens. Representative Jules A Dreyfus was stricken Monday afternoon at the dinner table of his brother, Leon Dreyfus, with a stroke of paralysis and cerebral hemorrhage. All possible medical attention was given him. Specialists from New Orleans with a corps of trained nurses, reinforced the local medical profession in an attempt to save his life. Mr Dreyfus was born in 1866 at Mulhouse, Alsace, and attended the professional school of Mulhouse until 17 years old, coming to America in 1881. In 1887, Mr. Dreyfus together with his brother, Leon Dreyfus came to New Iberia and opened a general merchandise store under the firm name of J. and L. Dreyfus, and met with great success. Immediately upon becoming a resident of New Iberia he became a strong personality in the community, to whose advancement he contributed liberally of his means and time. He was lately engaged in rice milling operations, having disposed of his interest in the Jules Dreyfus Wholesale Company. He was a constant reader, and the information which he gathered, added to an aptitude for public speaking, made him a ready debater, and an active factor in all public gatherings. He took an active part in politics and although foreign born, he always evinced not a thorough devotion to the country of his adoption and a complete understanding of the underlying principles of our constitution. He was serving a second term as Iberia's representative in the Legislature. During his first term, under the Parker administration, he was chairman of the ways and means committee and was a actor at the capitol. He engaged in many contests and never feared to express his opinion, but always emerged with the good will of his opponents. His was a genial and hospitable nature, which gathered a large circle of friends, and he was easily re-elected to public office. Mr. Dreyfus, together with his brother, were naturalized in 1888, and never returned to Europe, preferring to live and die among the people of his adopted country. Mr. Dreyfus is survived by his brother and two sisters, Mrs Henry Mayer of New Iberia and Mrs A Grossman of New Orleans. The remains will be taken to New Orleans leavin New Iberia Sunday at 3:38 a.m. and interment will be direct from the Union depot in the Gentilly cemetery in New Orleans.
