New Iberia suffered the loss of one of its oldest and most prominent citizens in the death of Dr. Alfred Duperier, at his residence on St. Peters street, Wednesday. Dr. Duperier was a native of New Iberia, born Ahril (sic) 28, 1826. In 1867, during an epedemic (sic) of yellow fever, he rendered invaluable aid to this community in the professional services and in donating food and clothing to the needy. He was identified with the founding of the Republican party in this section of the State. His donations to publlc (sic) enterprises were numerous, prominent among them being the present site of the Catholic Cathedral. Hif (sic) father, Dr. Duperier, with Josiah French and others, was the founder of the present town of New Iberia. He was married twice his first wife being Miss L. Loisel of St. Mary parish. His second wife, who is the sister-in-law of Justice J. A. Breaux of the Louisiana Supreme Court, he met and married under quite romantic circumstances, having rescued her from drowning in the terrible Last Island storm of 1859 which entirely destroyed that place as a resort. Dr. Duperier leaves a widow and a number of childred (sic) all of whom are grown. Funersl (sic) services were held at at (sic) St. Peter's Catholic Church at 10 o'clock. Thursday forenoon and interment were made in the Catholic cemetery.
