DUPLANTIS BURIED AT SEA. - SON OF R. P. DUPLANTIS OF LYDIA. On Board Transport, Saturday, Oct. 12, 1918. Mrs. Odiele Duplantis, Lydia, La.: No doubt you already have been informed by the War Department of the death of your son Private Julius M. Duplantis on Wednesday, October 9th. He was a member of my company and as his company commander I wish to express my sincere sympathy in your bereavement. Private Duplantis died of pneumonia with a complication of influenza. He was buried at sea with full military honors. A flag draped his body as he was lowered into his watery grave. Taps was sounded and the ship's ensign floated at half mast. Six of his comrades acted as pall bearers, the services were attended by the company and train commander, the captain of the ship, two Y. M. C. A. secretareis (sic) and the Chaplain. Your son's personal belongings will be sent you as soon as we reach shore. In changing the blue star of your service flag to a gold one, there will be some satisfaction in knowing that your son died as a true American soldier for a just and true cause to help free the world of an autocratic government which is a menace to all peoples. And even though he died at sea before reaching the scene of battle, he died a hero, beloved by his fellow comrades and respected by Yours very sincerely, Rudolph S. Adler, 2d. Lieut. Quartermaster Corps, C. O. Motor Truck Co. No. 536. On Board Transport. In Mid-Atlantic Mrs. Odiele Duplantis, Lydia, La.: Dear Madam - We, the Y. M. C. A. secretaries attached to this transport for the present voyage, desire to take this opportunity of offering to you our very sincere and hearty sympathy on account of the untimely death of your son, Julius Duplantis. His death occurred from pneumonia following a brief attack of influenza, particulars of which you have probably received through the War Department, and his body was reverently committed to the sea, after a regular burial service conducted by clergy, and with military honors. Several other deaths occurred, and very much sickness, casting a distinct gloom over the entire voyage. It will be some comfort to you to know that your son had won the esteem of his officers, and was considered by them to be a good soldier, with excellent prospects of success. When his body was committed to the deep, the sea was calm and beautiful, a fitting emblem of the future peace and felicity which we trust he has gone to enjoy. Commending you in this dark hour to the ocomforting care of Our Heavenly Father, who rejects none that seek His help, we remain, Very sincerely your, D. S. SCADENY, WM. LAFOLLETTE The young gentleman was a son of Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Duplantis of Lydia and his death and burial at sea was a distinct shock to his numerous relatives in the Parish of Iberia. Mr. Duplantis was well-known in New Iberia and was farming on his own account in the vicinity of his father's plantation up to the time of his enlistment. The whole community extend their heartfelt sympathies to the grief-stricken parents. source: New Iberia Enterprise and Independent Observer.
