New Iberia mourns the loss of one of her staunchest and most useful citizens, in the death of Mr. August Erath, which occurred at his home at 11 o'clock, on Tuesday morning, September 11th. A man of splendid physique and excellent health, until a few years ago, when he suffered a severe attack of the grippe, his health began from that time to fail him and recurring attacks of the disease so undermined his constitution, that for several months he realized that the end could not be far off. He prepared for it with calm resignation and manly fortitude, and met the summons of his God with true christian resignation, surrounded by the dear ministering wife and daughters and other loving relatives who formed the happy household over which his genial spirit so affectionately presided. August Erath was a native of Switzerland and a fine and noble specimen of the stalwart people of that model country. He came to New Iberia nearly twenty-five years ago and was ever a faithful and useful member of the community. He was a man of marked business foresight and ability and contributed in no small degree to the development of the city, for his career was one of uninterrupted successes. A man of broad and liberal ideas, that characteristic displayed itself, in business relations and in all intercourse with his fellowmen. He was deservedly one of the most popular members of the community and appreciation of his sterling qualities was strongly implanted in the hearts of all men who came in contact with him. Besides the many business enterprises lauched (sic) by him and carried to successful issue, he served with conspicuous ability as Mayor of the city one term and was three times elected a member of the City Council. He took an active part in all measures for the promotion of the interest and advacement (sic) of the city, and especially to his influence and activity is New Iberia indebted for rail connection with Abbeville. He was a zealous and devoted member of the Masonic Fraternity, the Benevolent Association and Order of Knights of Pythias and large delegations from all of these attended his funeral in a body. Besides these there was a very large concourse of friends who accompanied the last earthly remains of the regretted dead to their last resting place in the Catholic cemetery after appropriate ceremonies at the Catholic church, conducted by Rev. Father P. M. Jouan. CARD OF THANKS. I desire to extend my sincere and heartfelt thanks and express my earnest appreciation to the many good friends whose kind attentions were so liberally and freely given in the affliction that has befallen me in the loss of my beloved husband, and especially to the members of the Masonic and Pythian Lodges and of the Benevolent Association. - MRS. AUGUST ERATH.
