In the death of Eloi Erath, who died at his home in this city Wednesday night at 10 o'clock, there passed away one of Abbeville's prominent and good citizens, a sterling gentleman, a good citizens, a sterling gentleman, a good and kind father and a true and loving husband. Mr. Erath had been ill for some time, although his condition was not looked upon as really serious up to within a short while previous to his being carried away to a higher home, where peace and happiness reigns supreme. He was a true gentleman, and was held in high esteem by every one who knew him. Mr. Erath was a native of Switzerland, having been born at Freiburg, that country, on the 22nd day of July, 1856. He came to America when he was but 16 years of age. He came to Abbeville about five years ago, followed by his family, and embarked in business, opening up the Court House Exchange Saloon and Restaurant in the Beauxis building at the corner of State and Concord sts., and also established the Abbeville Ice and Bottling Works. He successfully conducted the business of both, with the assistance of his sons, Ed and Armand, and had but recently built a beautiful new home on upper State street, which he and his family had taken possession of but a short while previous to his illness. Deceased leaves a wife, three sons and one daughter to mourn his loss, besides relatives in New Iberia, New Orleans and other points, and numerous friends throughout this community. The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock, under Masonic ceremonies, deceased having been a member of Potor Star lodge of that order, and the remains were interred in the Masonic cemetery. source: The Weekly Iberian. He was a brother of Victor and the late August Erath, of this place. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Erath went over to attend the funeral, which took place last Thursday. The iberian extends its sympathies to the bereaved families.
