On Tuesday evening at 6:25 o'clock the unwelcomed (sic) guest, Death, entered the home of Mr. Victor J. Erath, Sr., and closed his eyes in that dreamless sleep, which means the end of life's journey in this world of trouble and care. He passed into the great beyond, surrounded by his loved ones, to reap the rewards won by a consistent and conscientions (sic) course in this life. Mr. Erath was born on February 10th, 1854, in Barberche, Canton Frebourg, Switzerland. He came to the United States when comparatively a young man. After a residence of some years in New Orleans he moved to this city to make his home and became associated with his brother, August Erath, in the manufacture of ice. The Erath Ice & Bottling Co., Ltd, became the New Iberia Ice & Bottling Works in 1895 and shortly after Mr. Victor Erath became the sole proprietor. The deceased was a man of quiet and retiring disposition. In June, 1909, he was elected a member at large of the City Council and served out his term of office with a quiet dignity in keeping with his temperament. He was progressive in policy and always gave his support to measures calculated for the public good. He was a patron of the fraternal spirit. He was an acceptable member of the Societie de Bien Faisance et d'Assistance Mutuel, a knight of Honor, an Elk and a Mason. On June 21, 1895, Mr. Erath was raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason in Aurora Lodge and for the succeeding 18 years he kept his lambskin apron as spotless as it was when first placed in his hands. His life has been as blameless, he being ever sensible to those exalted duties he owed to his Heavenly Father, his lodge, his neighbor, his family and himself. His funeral took place from the Episcopal Church, under the direction and escort of his Masonic brothers. All the other orders were well represented. He is survived by his sorrowing and disconsolate widow, his son, Victor J. Erath, Jr., and three daughters, Mrs. Adolph LeGrand of Lake Charles, Miss Anna and Miss Alma Erath. CARD OF THANKS. We wish to express our sincere and heartfelt thanks to the many friends and neighbors for their many acts of generous kindness and practical sympathy shown us during the last illness and the passing away of our beloved husband and father, Victor J. Erath. We are especially thankful to all of those who sent so many and beautiful floral offerings. We are not unmindful of our great obligation due the Masonic Brotherhood for their prompt proffered services and the taking charge of the obsequies. We are duly grateful to the other fraternal organizations for the many evidences of their condolence. We are truly appreciative of the services of Rev. R. R. Diggs, pastor of the Episcopal Church, and of all others who so considerately endeavored to make the weight of our bereavement less by the exercise of a true Christian spirit of sympathy for those chastened by sorrow. - Mrs. VICTOR ERATH, Sr., & family.
