(New Iberia, La.) 1902-1944, January 07, 1905, Image 3 DEATH OF MRS. J. B. FONTELIEU. One by one the old lamdmarks of New Iberia are passing away. Last Monday at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. A. Bergerie, there passed to the great beyond the soul of Mrs. Jean Baptiste Fontelieu. Deceased was a native of Louisiana, born 90 years ago. She was of the numerous Miguez family, one of those driven to our shores by the cruel edicts of Great Britain, during the Acadian exodius. Her husband, Jean Baptiste Fontelieu was a native of France and died many years ago, leaving a widow, subject of this sketch, with a family of boys and girls to raise, which she did with great care and success, inculcating the best of principles which her family have ever retained. Hon. Theodore Fontelieu, ex-Judge of this District and politician of note was her eldest son, now deceased. Mr. Alpha Fontelieu another son still lives and is a shrewd business man of large means. Mrs. A. Bergerie, a daughter, survives her mother while a number of grand children remain to bless her memory. Hon. Charles Fonteileu, late U. S. Marshal, now deceased was her grandson, also Albert Fonteileu still living. Mrs. J. B. Lawton, is also a grand daughter, while a great number of great-grand-children are among the descendents of this truly good woman, whose life was spent in cheering the way and smoothing the rough places in the lives of her dear ones. The funeral was held at the Catholic Church, conducted by Fathers Frohn and Jonan and attended by a large concourse of friends who cherish her many virtues and who sincerely exclaim "Peace to her Ashes."
