HARRISON. - On last Saturday evening Dr. Jilson Payne Harrison shot him self at his home, on the west shore of Lake Tasse. Death ensued instantly. He left no statement assigning a reason for the act. Age, 46 years. Dr. Harrison, accompanied by his wife, motored to this city that afternoon, and visited friends while here. Before returning home they took in the motion picture performance at the Elks Theatre. They reached their home about six o'clock. Upon entering his home he went directly to the bathroom and committed the act. He used a revolver carrying a steel jacketed ball. The muzzle of the weapon was evidently put in his mouth before firing. The ball penetrated the brain and came out of the left side back of the head. Had it been possible to avert his intention by prompt remedial measures the Doctor would be still in the land of the living. Dr. Harrison, after completing his medical studies, located in the Fifth ward of this parish for the practice of his profession. In later years he retired from the arduous duties of a "country Doctor" and spent some time in traveling for recreation and the improvement of his general health. He finally returned to his old home and devoted himself to horticulture and the raising of registered thoroughbred cattle. His pecan grove, one of the finest in this parish, was just coming into bearing. His home, admirably appointed with a view to comfort and convenience, is one of the attractive places of that section. Far enough from town to be truly rural, yet the electric light and automobile supplied the elements which were calculated to bar the way to ennui. In February, 1898, he made application to Aurora Lodge, 193 F. & A. M., for membership and in the following May he received the M. M.'s degree. The funeral services took place at the residence at 2:00 Sunday afternoon. Rev. Hadley Harrison, an uncle of the deceased, of Franklin, officiated at the services at the residence. Interment was made in Rose Hill Cemetery at 4 o'clock with the usual Masonic service. The widow and the orphan have the heartfelt sympathies of this entire community on this occasion of their sudden and terrible bereavement. source: New Iberia Enterprise and Independent Observer. (New Iberia, La.) 1902-1944, December 23, 1916, Image 4 DR. JILSON PAYNE HARRISON - The sudden death of Dr. Jilson Payne Harrison at his plantation home last Saturday afternoon about 6:30 o'clock cast a gloom over his friends in New Iberia, which time only can eradicate. Dr. Harrison had been for many months a sufferer from insomnia, and it was evident to those near and dear to him that his suffering was affecting his health. The same afternoon of his death he transacted business in New Iberia and at 6:30 life had become extinct. Deceased was one of our most prosperous citizens and always took a foremost part in every movement for the general good of the community and only recently had invested thousands of dollars in the purchase of blooded stock for his farm on Lake Tasse. He also built up one of the finest pecan groves in the State which in a few years more would have made him independently wealthy, devoting all of his time to its cultivation, after he gave up his extensive medical practice some years ago. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of this City, the members of whom conducted the funeral rites at Rose Hill cemetery on Sunday afternoon at four o'clock. He leaves to mourn his demise, besides his widow and little daughter who survives him, three sisters, Mesdames J. R. Binford of Peoria, Ill.; J. W. Wyche of New Iberia and S. B. Hensley, a resident of Atwood, Kansas. The Enterprise extends its condolences to the grief-stricken relatives.
