Joseph Hebert and Wife and Their Adopted Son Crushed and Automobile Wrecked. "Like a swift fleeting meteor, a fast flying cloud; A flash of the lightning, a break of the wave Man passes from life to his rest in the grave." Last Saturday, Joseph Hebert of Petit Anse, his wife and their three children went over to visit their old neighbors, the Viators in the Spanish Lake Club House. The three children were Moise Laccumus, an adopted son, - nephew of Mrs. Hebert - Adam and Martha. The parents and two boys left for home about 9 o'clock P.M. Miss Martha Hebert remained for a longer visit. Some shopping was done at the Walet store. Adam Hebert went to mail a letter at the depot mail box and his father started to cross the Southern Pacific track, intending to wait for his son on the other side. Just at this time a freight crew were backing a train of cars on the track which the Heberts were crossing. A brakeman on top of a car saw the automobile and shouted a warning. The noise of the train and the noise of the auto engine, no doubt, drowned his voice. The first of the cars struck the auto, crushing it with the impact and shoving it along on the track. The heavy train could not be checked at once by the brakes but the train crew did the best possible. The car had so far overridden the broken automobile, that it had to be lifted so the bodies of the victims could be taken out. All three were dead. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hebert were respected farmers who tilled land of Hamilton Derouen in the 9th ward. They had taken Moise Laccumus into their home and raised him as their son. They were kind, hard working, honest people and the whole community is shocked and saddened by their sudden deaths. Besides Adam and Martha they are survived by four married daughters. These are Mrs. Louis Breaux, Mrs. Edwin Boutte, Mrs. E. D. Pellerin, and Mrs. B. J. Pellerin. They must comfort each other in their bereavement. Joseph Hebert was 52 years old, his wife Aglaise Laccumus Hebert was 53, and the adopted son, Moise Laccumus but 19 years. The bodies were taken to the Romero funeral parlors and prepared for burial. Funeral services were hold [sic], Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Father J.M. Langlois, pastor of St. Peter's Church. A very large congregation of sorrowing relatives and neighbors were present to attest their love and respect for the dead. The bodies were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery. Iberian.
