(New Iberia, La.) 1902-1944, July 26, 1913, Image 2 DEATH OF GABRIEL LANDRY. - Mr. Gabriel Landry, a scion of one of most prominent families of Iberia Parish, died rather suddenly and unexpectedly at his plantation home near New Iberia, early Monday morning. Although suffering for the past two or three months, with what he believed to be inflammatory rheumatism, his condition was never considered serious nor caused him to relinquish his work until a day or two before the end. His death was therefore a severe shock to his family as well as to this entire community, where he was well known and universally liked for his manly qualities and sterling worth. The eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Alphonse Landry, the decedent was born on his father's plantation in the year 1875. After receiving his education at Spring Hill College, he returned to his home and became his father's assistant in the management of the plantation. In 1901, on the death of the latter, he was called upon to assume charge of the extensive family holdings which continued in his keeping until the time of his own death. Intelligent, conscientious and progressive, Mr. Landry was regarded a leader among the planters of the Parish and the Landry plantation a model of a perfectly conducted farm. An indefatigable worker himself, he exacted full service from his employees and yet afforded to all such, kind and fair treatment, that naught but the infirmities of age, or death ever retired any of those who had served the family during the life of the father and had continued with the son; in the funeral cortege, many of these life- time retainers, bowed in sorrow, followed their beloved master to his last resting place. Twelve years ago, Mr. Landry was married to Miss Marie DeBlanc, daughter of Mr. Leopold DeBlanc, who with four small children survive the husband and father. One brother, Mr. P. A. Landry and two sisters, Mesdames Albert and Pierre Landry, both of Lafayette Parish also remain to grieve over his untimely death. To these, the sympathies of an entire community are extended. And yet though crushed beneath the burden of their grief, these loved ones have been bequeathed a heritage from which comfort, sweet and lasting, shall always be derived. A well spent life, dutiful towards his God, devoted to his family, helpful to his fellow man will place Mr. Landry's memory amongst the cherished ones of the Parish and in after years, his children will ever be proud to bear his name. His funeral last Monday evening was one of the largest ever witnessed in this community. The local lodge of Elks, of which he was a valued member, conducted the ceremonies at the home and escorted the body to New Iberia where it was met by the Knights of Columbus and conveyed to St. Peter's Catholic Church where Rev. Father Girault chanted the funeral services and delivered a beautiful panegyric over the remains of his parishioner. The interment in the St. Peter's Cemetery, although performed during a rain, was attended by a large concourse bearing further testimony to the love and esteem in which the deceased was held by all. source: New Iberia Enterprise and Independent Observer. (New Iberia, La.) 1902-1944, August 02, 1913, Image 2 IN MEMORIAM OF GABRIEL LANDRY. For over six years Gabriel Landry has been a member of this Order. As a brother he has ever been loyal and ready to do his duty towards his Lodge and his fellow Elks, and he was greatly beloved and esteemed by them all. He was a kind, respectful and dutiful son; a loving and devoted husband and father; and an honest true and upright Christian. He was of a gentle and unassuming mien, but within the innerman, was that generosity of nature, kindliness and largeness of heart, and greatness of soul, and "The elements were so mixed in him that Nature might stand up and say to all the world, "This was a man!" While yet in the prime of vigorous manhood, with a glorious future before him, the thread of life was untimely cut; yet within those few short years, "He lived most," for he thought most, felt the noblest and acted the best." His demise is deeply regretted and sincerely felt by his Brother Elks of Lodge 554 of New Iberia, and as a mark of love, esteem and respect entertained for him. Be it resolved, That his name be inscribed upon the Tablet of this Lodge, and that a page of the Minute Book be dedicated to his memory. Be it further Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his bereaved widow and children and likewise to the press. ISIDORE W. GAJAN, Chairman. J. WOFFORD SANDERS, JUNIUS H.
