Manning, once Chief Justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court, died at her home, 2724 Milan street, Wednesday evening. The funeral was held at 10:36 o'clock yesterday morning from St. George's Episcopal Church, Rev. Byron Holley officiating. Interment was in Metairie Cemetery, beside the grave of her husband. Mrs. Manning, before her marriage, was Miss Louise Blair of North Carolina. She was eighty-four years old at the time of her death. Three daughters survive her, Mrs. Nina Johnson of New Iberia, Mrs. Donaldson Foster of Franklin and Mrs. G. W. Compton of Shreveport. Thomas C. Manning was appointed Chief Justice in 1876 by Gov. Nicholls. He succeeded the radical administration upon the Supreme bench and played an important part in wiping out the marks of radical rule. He held the office until the new Constitution framed by the convention of 1879 went into effect. Later Justice Manning was United States minister to Mexico under President Cleveland. He died in Mexico City in 1887, while serving in that capacity. By request of the State his body was returned to New Orleans and buried in Metairie Cemetery. - Times Democrat March 15.
